Parking Brake Sticks

[Loose Deuce]

What would make the parking brake stick on the Deuce? After releasing the parking brake, the shoues are stuck and truck wont moove, without dumping the clutch. When it lets loose it makes a loud pop, like a rifle. It doesnt look like the shoue material needs changing. Adjustment seems ok too.

When I first purchased the truck, I did drive it about two miles with the parking brake on<img src="emoticons/icon_smilie_bitchin.gif" alt="Bitchin">. It may have glazed the linings? what do you guys think????????<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_dork.gif" alt="Dork">

I've seen several things make them stick, such as improper adjustment, a broken spring, a cable that simply needed to be lubed, a kinked cable but 9 times out of 10 it's been the adjustment. Had ice freeze mine stuck in colorado one time.

I'm bringing an old one back as to not start a new one. The parking brake on my Deuce has worked well for the last 2 years , I've lubed/ adjusted per TM's but I got in yesterday to move her and truck didnt want to move in reverse, forward was ok. The old girl got rained on quite a bit this last week, could that have any affect on the parking brake?

I had mine stick after it got wet. There are two springs, the one at the top and the mustache spring, Could be time to replace them.

There should be 3 springs(including the moustache spring). Look at figures 88 and 89 in TM 9-2320-361-20P.

Be sure your adjusted correctly and lubed well. I have also seen the cable get sticky right under the handle.

I have found that the spring on top of the brake's arm is the major culprit. I replaced it and have had good results.

I found one of my shoes had seized on the shaft due to corrosion.

You might wanna pull your apart, sand/grind/sandblast the shafts smooth, paint them, make sure everything rotates smoothly, then lube, assemble and re-lube (through the zerk).


By the way, awesome search job!! Thanks. That's the way to dig the old ones up and keep pertinent info together.

Check your adjustment on both ends, make sure you have enough "looseness". And has been said above, maby it is time to replace the spring on the business end under the truck.

I had the same problem with mine. The pivot points on both shoes were sticking due to corrosion and it took a while to get them off to clean them up.
On an older vehicle like these, I would just pull everything apart and check for free movement adjustment and the return springs.

Brake Rebuild

40 miles into a 167 mile trip last month, I realized I was having similar problems. Turns out there is a meaning behind "DRAIN TANKS DAILY". Seems as condensation contaiminated the brake system and the brake cylinders needed to be rebuilt. Simple but time consuming.......
