starter relay issues

Mornin all, I've got a problem with my m1009 starter relay. I have a manuel glow plug switch hooked up, but the issues i've had have been the starter relay has to be replaced about once evry two-three weeks. I guess it depends on how much its been driven. Well this last time I noticed that the last three times i turn the ignition off, the engine does not turn off immediataly, but just a very short time after the ignition is turned off, and finally i have started having to pull the starter relay out of the connection when the engine starts to keep the starter from continuing to spin. whats up?.

Since no one can go off a schematic to see what exactly has been modified from stock, it's going to be hard to help diagnose the problem.

I'd suspect the ignition switch. Something is causing the starter relay to be powered to ong, burning it out. The switch may also relate to the running after off problem. Ignition switch can be a cheap and not to hard fix. Remember, ignition switch, not key switch.

Use the schematic to understand the function of each wire going to the relay. Replace it with one similar to the Glow Plug Relay. (more of a solenoid) You shouldnt have trouble with it anymore after that.

Not as 'likely'

The starter relay is WAY under rated for the load it carries. Its VERY common for those to stick and fail. They like to weld shut.

Got a product recommendation? I might be interested in a new relay since I'm going through the 12V conversion.

ps, I've been away awhile, but I like the new site.

As far as I know, the relay is only needed to switch the 24v on to the starter from the 12v in the cab. A 12v conversion could eliminate the relay. Or, just eliminate the relay again and use a push button switch available from any auto parts store for the starter, like people use for the glow plugs. That's what my buddy did on his Blazer when his relay welded itself shut.

Any ford type, ie. remote starter relay is what he's describing, (I think). About $10.00 at most shops. Looks like the one that should be bolted to your fire wall near the brake booster. Theres a pic of my glow plug one in my gauges post.

The glow plug relay is bolted to the firewall. The starter relay (crosses to part number AC40, and no, I don't remember what part number that is, but any parts store can cross it) is under the dash. It's, um, the one that looks like the AC40 relay. Yeah, that's about $10-$20 depending on brand/store/location/whatever. The glow plug relay, (which, did I mention, looks completely different) is going to be at least $30-$50, used, and $100+ new.

Remember that the only purpose for the "starter" relay is to reduce the current carrying requirement of the start switch.
The starter solenoid may draw 30 to 50 amps depending on model and voltage, so the "starter relay" must be selected accordingly. If you eliminate the starter relay, that current must be carried by the start switch and cables to it dimensioned for that current...impractical in most cases....

I got a 60-amp pushbutton switch at Pep Boys for $6 or something. It's the same one we use on all the race cars we build. It's not big.

Bjorn, the purpose for this relay is to switch the start signal from the ignition switch to 24v. Remember, 99% of the wiring in a CUCV is 12v.
