Suggestions for CUCV Wiki info

So I was looking at the CUCV wiki and reading through the TMs, and just thought the wiki could be updated a little bit with some more info. I'm just a noob, so I'm probably not the guy to post the info. Of course, I realize the TMs have all the required info, but isn't the point of the wiki to give a quick reference to FAQs? It would be a big help when doing PCMS to have a one click stop for all the info.

So here's what I was thinking should be on there:

1. Recommended oil weight, quantity and filter type
2. Engine coolant/water ratios & quantity
3. Fuel filter part# and vendors
4. Air filter part# and vendors
5. Transmission/transfer case fluid type and quantities
6. Recommended brake fluid type
7. Recommended power steering fluid type/quantity
8. Glow plug model/vendor (think it's already listed)
9. Civilian availability/equivalancy for GAA and GO lubes
10. Original tire specs, equivalents, options and availability
11. Key code ;D
12. Part numbers/recommendations for changing lock and ignition key cylinders.
13. Various belts/part numbers (e.g. alternator, etc)
14. Replacement alternators
15. Required/recommended battery size/cca/type
16. Vacuum lines/hoses specs
17. Fuel line sizes/specs
18. Wire gauges/fuses for various electrical systems
19. Lights- bulb specs/vendors

Like I said, I realize most of this is in the TMs, but it would be a lot easier to click the wiki instead of browsing through a couple hundred pages and searching sometimes vague and unrelated forum posts.

Maybe we should index and create some step-by-step how to's as well so noobs don't keep asking the same quesitons, e.g. check/replace glow plugs, 24-12v conversion, fuel filter change, oil change, tranny & coolant flush/fills, etc.

Just my $.02

If you know the answers... feel free to add it. The wiki is there for members to adjust...
When I get a bit of time, I'll add the ones I can find, but as a noob, there's still a lot I don't know. And as always the recommendations of the veterans are pretty valuable. More comments always welcome.

1. Diesel oil, most commonly found in 15W-40. I think it takes 7 quarts, I just buy two gallons and fill until it's full.
2. Whatever ratio you want that doesn't freeze. I think mine is a little more than 30% antifreeze, the rest water, but it doesn't get THAT cold here. Water cools better, so the general rule is to use as little antifreeze as you can get away with to avoid freezing. I just test with a cheap antifreeze tester until I'm at, say, -10 degrees F or so, and then call it a day. That said, you need *some* antifreeze in there for corrosion protection and waterpump lubrication even if you're in Death Valley, so straight water for extended periods should be avoided. This isn't special to the CUCV, it's just normal car stuff.
3. Your local auto parts store. Whatever part comes up when you tell the parts monkey it's a K30 with a J-code diesel.
4. See above.
5. As I recall, both take regular GM ATF. Well, I think the transfer case calls for Dexron II, but that's superceeded by Dexron III, so anyway, it's GM ATF for both. I don't know the quantities.
6. DOT5, unless you completely flush the system and replace with 3/4.
7. Regular old power steering fluid. Any auto parts store. Nothing fancy.
8. Wellman 070, typically purchased on eBay.
9. Gear oil is regular old gear oil. Nothing fancy, although GM calls for an additive for the lockers. Interestingly, Eaton says you don't need additives for the Detroit Lockers in the 1008s, but hey, it won't hurt anything. Just regular, standard GM friction modifier additive stuff. Same goes for greases and everything else.
10. 235/85R16, Load Range E*.
11. lulz
12. Standard GM components. Junkyard comes to mind, or a GM dealership, eBay, whatever. Nothing fancy. Just regular GM stuff.
13. Damn, I was on a roll. I have these somewhere.
14. Tough one. Getting the old one rebuilt is my method.
15. GM calls for two 550CCA batteries in parallel for the civilian application, so it would stand to reason that two in series should start the truck just fine, because it would have the same ultimate wattage. That said, I prefer bigger batteries, because, well, more power beats less any day. I've got 1000 CCA commercial batteries, they were around $125 each.
16. Who cares? Just take the old one into a good parts store and match it to one of their reels.
17. See above.
18. Tough one. Don't really know where to start.
19. Any local hardware store. Just pull out the old one and get the number off of it if it's burnt out. Nothing special.

My thoughts, on most of these, is that they don't need to be in the Wiki. They're just regular, plain old, off the shelf, nothing special GM items that can be had at any auto parts store at any time. Adding all this stuff to the Wiki will just start a slippery slope of adding even MORE stuff, and then the Wiki will cease to be a concise way to get a few basic factoids. All in all, the truck is a base model K30. Personally I think that the Wiki should be reserved for the military-specific stuff.

* [EDIT] This is for the 1008s. I forget the tire sizes for the 1009s. As for what else will fit, that depends on how much you want to lift/cut.

Good point about not cluttering up the wiki, and the inevitable downward slide. But see, now the cool thing that's happened is if someone searches for the CUCV wiki, this should show up, too. Just part of my evil plot...:-D

But thats exactly what the Wiki is for. Its ability to divide it into sections makes it great for all that info... When organized in a good manner....

Well, that's where I've always had issues with a lot of Wikis on a lot of other forums. Since anyone can edit them, they end up containing info that's no more reliable than can be found by reading the forum, and they often grow to a length that makes them no more concise than a manual or other source. The best executed articles that I've seen are the ones that are boiled down to the most important information.

In response to numerous requests from newbies and members alike, I've added a fair amount of info to the CUCV wiki, specifically in the M1009 section. Please feel free to take a look and make corrections/edits or move things around as necessary. I spent a good amount of time researching part numbers, fluid quantities, etc. but I may have missed a thing or two. Comments welcome.:)
