did you get a look at the crank surfaceon your engine? maybe emerycloth would smooth imperfections. on seal install at work i pack seal with a thick lube or grease. seen way too many seals burn up on the 1st crank before oil can get there.:-D

Yeah I packed it with grease before I installed it, but I think this problem is a groove in the crank from the old seal. . .

I couldn't really get a good look at the crank surface, just assumed I had a bad seal. . . wrong. . .

Looking at TM 9-2815-210-34-2-2, page 4-30 it says if there is a groove greater than .005, get a new crank, but they don't reference the diam of the flange. . .

Is it (the size) in a TM somewhere?

Is the engine still in the back of the truck?

Yeah, but I measured the crank in the 109A3 in the Shop, tranny was aleady out of it. I was hoping to get confirmation on my measurements before I ordered the sleeve, oh well, I rechecked it today and came up with the same numbers, so I ordered one. We'll see Monday if its the right size. :|

I have a quick question. What's the easiest way to get the rear main housing out?

To get access to the area of the crank I'm talking about requires removal of the transmission, flywheel, and rear main seal/housing depending on which style rear main seal retainer you have.

I know, I have my trans and flywheel out. I don't know how to get the rear main seal and it's housing out though. I need to replace my seal and add the drain holes (per TM), but I don't have the TM section about removing the seal housing.

Well, you either have a flat plate with 2 holes in it on the bottom of the plate and the seal pressed into the bellhousing, or you have a housing with 5 or 6 bolts in it that when removed will allow the housing and seal to come off as an assembly.

If you have any questions call me 575-382-9057

I'll give you a call, but I have the one with 6 bolts in it and comes out as an assembly.

Good deal!, make sure you check for a groove on the crank, TM seez more than .005, get a new crank. . . not an option for me, so I spent 80.00 ish for a speedi sleeve. It'll be here Monday.

I did the same thing you are doing, but I still have a leak. . .

But not after Monday!

I'll be sure to check the crank. Wouldn't have though about it if I wouldn't have read your thread. I may need a sleeve, seems like everything else on this truck needs replaced :|

Well I pulled the transmission out today and found this, the seal appears in good shape when compared to my new in the box seal. And the grease I used to lube the seal when I replaced it the first time was still present. I think this dimple kept a gap open on the bottom allowing the oil to run out. I made a new gasket, but my problem is I cant get a dial indicator on the crank to check for a groove. I cant feel one with my fingernail and can't see one. I'm thinking about putting it back together and skipping the speedi sleeve because the crank appears to be in good shape. Any thoughts?

I would say you're right. That's a sizeable dimple and any kind of pressure at all would push oil past that. You just saved yourself $80!
I paid for the "special order" sleeve in advance so. . . lol

Oh well I have a "few" other trucks. . . :p

Should the entire shaft be smooth where the main seal sits? There shouldn't be a ridge anywhere on there right? I got my rear main and housing off today and there's a decent sized ridge on the crank. However, it feels raised and not worn INTO the crank. That's what has me wondering?
