A visual cheat for your locking hubs

I've seen the white paint.

But when I saw it in red, it just jumped out at me.

I guess that's why I posted it. Because it was different, being red.

We have a lot of guys in our club with deuces/5 tons that put white stripes on all their lug nuts. That way a visual inspection will show whether or not the lug nuts have loosened since the last time they were tightened and painted with the white stripe.

I do like that idea, but feel it's overkill on a CUCV. I could be wrong though.

Red is good if you are a bull fighter or a fire truck. Cranetruck should be along shortly with the PS magazine articles showing the military how-to.

I like the free idea, but that's where my hubs are most of the time, and you can still tell at a glance what condition they are in, as long as your memory is accurate!

I painted mine with the red on the 'lock'. Kind of a 'caution you idiot, you are in 4x4'.

And one of my buddies took a pix of one of the deuces with the lug nuts with RED stripes, so go figure when I'll get THAT pix. We did a parade on Memorial Day and he took a pix with his camera phone.

Just curious. Do most of you guys leave your front hubs Locked or "free". If you leave them locked most of time you're kinda asking for little trouble with the plastic slides on the shifter forks inside the transfer case to wear out much quicker and when you do put in 4wd shifter could start "jumping" out of 4wd.

I heard it is good to lock them up at least once a month to keep everything "free" but if your running regular roads it is a MUCH better to leave them unlocked as you get better mileage and the drive train doesn't have to do as much work.

I always leave mine unlocked when driving around. You can get some strange vibrations from the front end if everything is turning and your front driveshaft is out of balance or if one hub is locked and the other isn't. Plus, it wears stuff out quicker.
