Power loss W/395's

When I restored my truck I decided on the 395’s as they just look good on the truck but I am suffering from power loss. On the flats she will fly but pulling hills, even small ones there is a large power loss. I have thought about going to 14.5 / 20 to help out some. I have really been thinking about just bobbing it off and keeping the 395’s. It would make the truck so much more driver friendly for the trips to town and parking would be much nicer. For those that have bobbed trucks and run 395’s or larger tires, what type of power do you have? Enough to pull hills or still needing more?

Well I had to turn the fuel down. I never knew I had a problem until I installed the pyro. It was 1,250 + on the hard pulls. I even saw it at 1,300+ a couple times.
I am hoping I did not hurt the motor. If it is cold it is really hard to start now. With it floored and holding the starter it continues to turn over and start running really slow and then build RPM in a couple minutes and then run fine. I am running really thick WMO, WHO, etc so that might be my problem along with cloged filters as I have not changed the filters in about a year. With a mist of starting fluit it will bust off a lot quicker.

O yea, the WMO makes for some slow winter starts. Cut mine with some gas, and still need a wiff of ether below 20 degrees. Need to try the flame heater again, since adding some gas to it. On diesel, it started at 5 degrees with the flame heater.

Pyro is before the turbo.
New probe but old guage. I am going to swap guages bit I think it os correct. I can smell the paint on the muffler sometimes.

Steve, if you have a gas BBQ grill, take the tank and regulator off of it. Then run a hose to the turbo. It helps alot. That was the only way I could get any kind of speed with the multi fuel and all 6 1600's with out cooking the motor. Saturn has 5 ton LDS turbos I have heard that helps

Still needing ideas. Might try the LP gas but would like to fix the problem first. I can get it to start if I give it a sniff of starting fluid and keep the go peddle to the floor. Temp outside is 80-90. It might take several tries and it will finally bust off. Once it is warmed up it will start if the go peddle is kept on the floor and starter button is held in. When I got the truck it took two turns and started. It is not making any unusual noise while running that I can hear but I normally can’t even hear a turbo spool so I might not be hearing everything. It does not have any power and I can’t really get out of 4th gear going down the road. I have notice a lot of oil seep on the side of the block but no oil / water – water / oil contamination. There is some smoke from the slobber tube when warm but not a lot. I have not checked to see how much pressure from the tube. I noticed that the EGT’s when driving stay 1,100 – 1,300 in 4th pulling inclines etc. It has slowly lost power over the last couple years but really lost power after pulling a 33,000# truck home some 40 miles several months back.
Any ideas what is going on? Too much loss in power, something has to be wrong.

Head gaskets, valves, pistons, etc?

Steve, Stretch just did a head gasket job on his truck and said the injectors were pretty coked up. Might want to pull them and have them cleaned. Have you tried a tank of just diesel?

i bet your filters are clogged........

are you filtering your wmo/who before use? you need to get all of the dirt out of it for sure, you will go through tons of filters if you do not......

the go pedal only controls fuel..... wmo will make for some hard starts when cold, but it should run fine as long as the filters are good to go....

As atated above --- before looking anywhere else check "change" the filters.

Oil seapage on the passengers side of the block can be normal. Change the filters.

395s on a bobbed deuce work great! When I first got my truck it had 1400s. My opinion is that 1400s will tax an LDT with stock fuel settings. The 395s work great.

I question whether 395s are safe on stock rims. I lost a good friend last winter when a tire/wheel blew up.

You're right about a bodded deuce being a lot easier to drive and park.

I've got a good set of 1400s I may sell someday.

If you dilute WMO with Wild Turkey and Old Spice your truck will not only stat easier but it will be more fun to drive and the chicks will dig it. :-D

939 series trucks have the 250 cummins in them coupled to a allison 5 speed. they do ok. but just like everything else, they have limits. pulling im guessing 30000 lbs. did somethin to it, didnt really kill it but it ran like poop later on. it was our fastest truck too
