COuld only be the civilian hummer
since its based off of the tahoe chassis and nothing really in common with the mil-spec model any more

GM (General Motors) owns (and now it seems sold) "HUMMER".

AM General makes the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) for the US military.

No matter what the soccer moms and macho wannabe's think - a "HUMMER" is NOT a "High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle ".

A "HUMMER" is just a fancy, overpriced Tahoe.

AM General will keep doing what it's doing and I guess China will make fancy overpriced Tahoes.

Due in part to the military HMMWV's success in Desert Storm, AM General introduced a civilian version of the vehicle called the HUMMER in 1992. Known as “the world’s most serious 4x4,” the revolutionary vehicle has found favor with commercial users who appreciated the value of HUMMER’s long life and amazing performance, and individuals who seek the ultimate in toughness and mobility. In 1999, General Motors acquired the HUMMER brand worldwide and rebadged the original vehicle H1. In 2002, AM General began assembling the HUMMER H2 for GM in its new factory in Mishawaka, Ind. This vehicle was designed by and is marketed by General Motors. In 2006, production of the H1 ceased. Although GM acquired the HUMMER brand, they do not own any part of AM General.

What I want to know is when we Americans can buy the surplus ones. I thought part of the scheme was to control the market so that GM could sell them for 80k.

Surplus General Motors HUMMERS? The market is FLOODED with them! Which has NOTHING to do with your ability to buy a surplus AM General HMMWV.

Why would anyone think that the reason you can't get a AM General HMMWV at GL is because General Motors was selling new HUMMERS?

That deal was with AM General, AM had at the time a repair deal that instead of selling the ones that needed to surplused out they went back to AM to be refurbished.
The military ones don't meet DOT standards. Wayne

There is all sorts of rumor and conspiracy theory floating about on the subject of surplus HMMVWs, and one of them is that surplus HMMVWs on the open market will hurt the H2/H3 sales, which is complete BS of course.

I have heard several plausible reasons why the HMMVW will no go out on the civilian surplus market in 2011, but nothing concrete or official...

Don't confuse military HMMWVs with civilian HUMMERs.

The HUMMER 2 bears no linage to a HMMWV; it is a redesigned Chevy Tahoe. You will notice that a HUMMER 2 has a conventional solid rear axle while a HMMWV has fully independent suspension. The only thing GM about a HMMWV is the engine and transmission.

GM bought the name HUMMER and built a plant to manufacture them and then contracted AM General (old American Motors truck and Jeep division) to operate the plant.

The H3 is an even bigger joke than the H2. Built on the Colorado frame, the H3 does nothing well except look stupid. If the Chinese want it, go for it.
