Radio Trouble

I hope some of you radio gurus can help me and Sevo out.

He installed a Vic-1 in his deuce, and it works great. Last night he installed a vt-246 radio into the system and now there is constant static and the intercom system no longer works. The TMs weren't much help to the non-electronic savy, we did use them to verify all the switch settings and wiring.

Anyone have any ideas? we disconnected the radio and the intercom worked just fine again.

Thanks!

Yep, your AM1780 box needs set to other and other. I think it is set to INT and INT. You will need a small flat tip or knife blade to turn the one.

Use the radio just for show, since he does not have a license to transmit anyway. Offhand, it sounds like there is a supressor missing. Do you KNOW that the radio works properly? You may need to go to the "Boatanchors" new site on Yahoo Groups (milsurplus) and search there for an answer. BTW, boatanchors is a common term for old military radios, and once you have lugged an RT-68 a hundred yards, you'll know why. UPS man groaned when he brought one from the truck to my front door (it's long since gone).

Carnac, what do you mean by other and other on the 1780? there is only other labeled on the 'screw switch'.

Mike, we can't even use it to listen until we figure this out.

I have two army subcourses in pdf that might have the answer. 1 is for troubleshooting the an/vic-1 without a radio and the other for troubleshooting the an/vic-1 with fm radio.

I'm going to try to upload them to resources, but don't know how long it will take for them to be available. Let me know if you want an email copy.

Not sure if this would cause the situation that you describe, but have you checked to see if the internal connection in the 1029 mount (which I would guess you have) is in the remote setting? It needs to be when operating with an AM 1780 and the VIC 1 system.

okji tested the am 1780 with out the radio hooked up and all is good, am 1780 works great , zero static.

When I hook the radio up more static and sometimes it has so much it hurts.

thoughts?

I have a new antenna base coming this week so I will see if that is the problem.

Think I may have found it.. it has to do with jumpers in the 1029 mount. thanks BC for the heads up on that. It isn't a switch per se but jumpers. The pic on the left is for the newer and the one on the right is older.

take a look here . My jumpers are set up for local in my mount and they need to be on remote if you're using a am 1780 with the radio ( i have the older mount)

I will test it out tomorrow

I got home today and decided to see if she would work... after putting the base back together and getting all the wires re plumed, I flipped the switch on the radio then the am-1780 and they both are working great!!

The jumpers inside the mount was the problem. The intercom works and the bad static is gone.

anyone know how I can see if I can at least receive on the radio? I cant transmit as I don't have a license, but it would be great to know I can pick up some signal. Anyone near Columbia have a radio they can fire up?

thanks for the help and input, i really appreciate it

I will post some pictures of the entire set up in my Vic-1 system thread.

What is it that you do.Right now no vic 1 yet but when I do the VIC 1 connection what do you do to make the connection make a jumper wire for the two screws. The thing is mine has a interconnecting box [J-3513A/U] hooked to the MT-1029 mount right now any help. And can you hook the J-3513A/U to the VIC 1,it uses the CX-4723 cable.Sorry to ask but dont want to blow anything.

You just loosen the screws and turn the jumper link around to the other screw. The 3513 box is for connecting a KY-57 scrambler to the radio and will serve no purpose for you. Hope this helped...
