News: USAA will start insuring deuces and other MVs in the fall

Just got off the phone with USAA's commercial division.

The lady told me they've gotten requests from other members with military trucks but their underwriter (progressive) doesn't insure MVs... HOWEVER, at their last meeting, they made a good proposal pointing out that they do insure other vehicles that weigh quite a bit more and are used in higher risk situations.

So Progressive is putting together a program to insure used MVs through USAA. The agent wasn't able to give me a definite date, but said to check back in around september or october.

She was not able to give me a ballpark figure on rates.

So... this doesn't help me for right now. Anyone know who else in Texas might insure my deuce for personal use right now? I've tried Farm Bureau (they won't insure it at all) and State Farm (who hasn't gotten back to me yet).

I'm not really interested in classic vehicle insurance, as I'd like to be able to drive it around other than in parades and club functions and still be covered.

So USAA will be insuring Deuces as commercial?? That would be awesome as my other vehicles are already insured through them. Their rates are always the cheapest, so I'd guess they'd be pretty good for MV's too.

Ok, talked to the local insurance agent and she told me that two companies would insure me (of the ones on their list)

Traveler's and Progressive

Progressive was the cheaper one, at $170/6 months. I'm going to go down there and look at any fine print I can to make sure they really do know what it is and that the policy will be valid and conform to their own rules. I really don't want to plop down $170, get in a wreck, and find out that I wasn't really insured after all!

HUMMMMMMMM..........my 5 ton wrecker is insured with Progressive...it is a commercial policy but since I have farm tags on it and it is not for hire the rate is decent.

My agent is well aware of what it is but I am not sure if she made it clear to Progressive that it was a military vehicle. She may have just told them it was an International Harvester.

I had a talk with some big wig at USAA a while back and indicated that I was not pleased that they would take my money for car insurance but would not give me a policy for my MV....which, as I pointed out to him, was itself a veteran and should be treated as such.
Maybe my rant helped to get them to change their policy.

That would be great news as USAA rates historically have been much cheaper for comparable coverages. Still can't figure out what has taken them so long. Hope it really happens.

USAA has an upper limit of I think 12K lbs empty weight on their personal policies. You have to talk to their commercial side for anything over that, but for some reason the commercial side doesn't like MVs for personal use.

Hopefully they'll cover 5 tons since that's what most of my green fleet is.

Later,
Joe

I used to be a Claims Manager for Progressive and we would not cover anything over 10k GVW on a personal auto policy (or motorcycle policy :). Commercial would of course be different.

Andy, if you're still looking try Victoria Ins - my agent Falcon Ins in San Antonio (ask for Greg 210-647-1112) just got me set up for $250 a year with a $500k Combined Policy.

Hope you're enjoying the deuce (even with the stick shift). I just picked one up myself. You need to start coming up to San Antonio for the MVPA meetings.

but, they already offer that: it's called Plain-Ol' Insurance.

?

Negative, USAA limits the weight at 10,000 lbs (not 12K). I have this in writing from USAA. If you have a deuce insured by USAA, it is not under a legally binding contract. Yes you are paying but they will not cover you in an accident. Don't believe me? Send them a letter/email yourself and ensure you tell them it is a former military vehicle weighing 13K. I have done this and have gotten the company policy. Don't even try to argue this, it is a fact. It does not matter which state, it is a blanket policy.

Matter of fact anyone with any insurance that is not specifically for former military (historic) vehicles, should send an email/letter to obtain a written confirmation your insurance will cover you for a vehicle of whatever weight yours is.

That's why I went with a commercial policy. It doesn't have the limitations that an antique/collector policy does. I recommend everyone read their policy and if not in total at least read the section typically called "Your Insured Auto" and the "Exclusions" section. Exclusions is where you'll see most auto policies state they will not cover vehicles over a certain weight.

This is good to know since I have my truck insured through USAA. I was very clear about the weight and type of truck it is. I covered each part at least 3 times and was put on hold a few times during the process so she could check with her boss. I'm thinking now that maybe the supervisor just ok'd it because they weren't sure what it was? It's not too bad, I don't drive the truck on the road because it's not licensed yet and it only costs me something like $22/month.

If U have the policy and U did not lie, it is insured, they certainly will drop U right after a claim though, but they have to, just like saying only certain drivers are covered, bunk, any one who gets behind the wheel of an insured vehicle is insured, now again if there is a problem they will dump U right after they make good on the policy, that is unless one lied......They may tell u at first they will not, but all insurance people are taught to lie, actually they are mostly lied to, but in the heat of it it "will" be paid...Randy

Wow, thanks mark. I'll give them a call.

The deuce is great. I drove it around on some back roads in San Pat county and none of the cops pulled me over. They just smiled and waved!

Hey, got any more info on the san antonio MVPA meetings? I'll IM you my number if you don't still have it.

Thanks for the insurance info.
