Anybody know what trucks generally have the Whistler turbo on them, is there a certain range of years it was installed on the Deuce? Is one make more likely to have a Whistler on it than another manufacturer?

Totally random. The military likes to swap parts with whatever is at hand at the time of maintenance. My LDT-D engine has the old skool LDS turbo on it and the truck was built in 1978.

Turbo question

Hello all, I am new to the m35a2. I bought one sight unseen. (hoping for the best!) is there a way to know by looking at the intake/ exhaust on the outside of the truck if it has a turbo or not? Planning to use it on the family farm for hauling pallets of seed and what not. Don't really need a lot of speed in the fields but a turbo sure would be nice. Some of our other trucks are natural diesels and they just lack power. If my truck does not have a turbo any idea what I can expect?

maybe. this question then...
what came first C or D turbo.. and what year was it first used?
LDS turbo came first on the 427 cubic inch multifuel engines. (That's the turbo my truck has)
"C" Whistler Turbo was popular in the 60's to sometime in the 70's
"D" Non-whistler Turbo from the 70's on out.

Not sure of the exact year they changed, but it really doesn't matter because the odds of your truck having the original turbo is slim. Especially if the truck was rebuilt at any point in it's life. Flip a coin and hope you get the one you want, or listen to the truck run in person before you buy it.

There are people on this site that can identify a turbo just by posting a decent picture of it.

If it really is an M35A2 it will be turbo charged. If the truck is something else, like an M109A3 (looks like a deuce but has a job shack on the back) then it may not be turbo charged.

Do you have a photo of the engine by any chance? Preferably from the passenger side?

We can usually tell if it is a turbo engine by looking at the exhaust stack. Post a pic

About 95% sure it has a turbo. Hope that is what you wanted!:razz:

Well, the deuce isn't a powerhouse, but it makes up for it in gearing. If it is an A2, it does have a turbo.

ok thx guys...i'm getting a little nervous with all the bad info i've read about GL. When I go get it I'll post some pictures. I'm not very technologically advanced. I've got to get a digital camera first.

A good friend has purchased five Deuces from GL at Ft.Sam in the last couple of months, most have had the quiet "D" turbos, but one was a "C", I think all his trucks came from the 36th, yours may be too.

The turbo was for smoke control not for power reasons, they only add 10hp. If you get a non turbo truck you aren't missing much. I have one of each and can't really tell much difference in power. My non turbo has a muffler and is easier on the ears.

Dad gum! Look what I started. Pawnshop, just F.Y.I. I did buy one of the Deuces at Fort Sam; am headed east to look at it this week; waiting on the EUC. I now call it my "smart truck", after the smart car. Can't wait to burn filtered used motor oil in it. Oh my, I feel so "ecologically" minded.

I know, I recognized the photo. Don't go too thick on the WMO, your FDC is almost certainly bypassed. Look it up, there are days of reading on the FDC here...

wow my expierence is exactly opposite. My m109a3 was non turbo. It was loud as balls, and slow as a retard in a wheelchair. it couldn't ever hold speed up a hill, and top speed up the hill near my house (if i hit the bottom at 55) was 37. My m35a2 with the d turbo isn't quite as loud, and can hold 53-54 up the same hill, accelerates quicker and actually will accelerate up a hill, not loose speed.
My brothers c turbo (whistler) is louder, and not as much power as the d, but still a HUGE difference in power. Up the same hill it holds 50 when hit at 55 at the bottom.

This isn't entirely true. I have seen several M35A2's with the LD-465 engine and no turbo. If my memory is correct M35's were gassers, A1's had the 427's, and the A2's were 465's. The clean air kits (turbos) were added for pollution and not horsepower increases. At some point in time (know it's after 71) they all had them installed from the factory.
