Folks, I need a little help here. When the GA Rally comes around I'll be picking up my M1008 from Papercu on the way. I'll be flat towing this machine home. I don't do well removing drive shafts so my plan is to remove the axle shafts for the 700 mile ride. What I'm looking for is the dimensions and bolt pattern of the axle shaft flange so I can brew up some block off plates. I'm also curious if there is any part of the spindle or spindle nuts that extend out beyond the flange of the hub. If it does I'll need to machine this area out to clear. I'll be putting a pipe plug in the plate so that I can add a little GO after the flange is installed. Pics a plus!

Ken, you're going to remove and re-install 16 1/2" bolts, mess with gear oil, RTV/Gaskets, mess, cleanup... How in the world is that easier than pulling the four 7/16" bolts that hold on the U-joinit straps, knocking the driveshaft loose with a pry bar, and securing it up to the frame with some zip ties?? If this is a GL truck, the driveshaft is probably bent anyway, so you gotta pull it eventually, right? :)

The parasitic loss of turning the shafts and gears in the rear end is just about zero compared to the wind drag of the combo of an M1008 and a lifted burb... :)

i agree with that. not sure if it matters or not, but i helped a friend flat tow a m1008. put the trans and transfer case in neutral. got were we needed to. drove the truck for 3 or 4 days and the 400 went. something to do with the clutches dont get atf i think i was i read.. drop the drive shafts is 15 min. after that no worries.

Napa sells the gasket - its made out of aluminum - could use as template to make a plate to install after you take axles out. Or get an old pair of axles and cut the shafts off - just bolt the flanges on and your done. I would do it your way to as you are not turning the gears or detroit locker ;-) for 700 miles

Chrysler, GM and Ford recommend either removal of the drive shaft or an axle if towed on the drive wheels for distances greater than 25 miles.

Automatic transmissions do not lubricate anything inside the transmission unless the front pump is turning which is driven by the torque converter. No engine turning, no lubrication.

Somedays I just don't think. The gaskets are a great idea as a template. I'm towing this with the deuce. My rationale is this, I can hook up my air hose and bang off the 16 bolts much faster than crawl under the truck and lose the 4 7/16" bolts for the driveshaft and tie it up. I can catch the dripping gear oil in a cup and dump it right into the deuce tank when I'm done. I can make certain there is adequate lube in the hub and not have to worry about any driveline issues at all including unknown or unforeseen problems with axle gears. The truck is not a GL truck and has a straight shaft but even that wouldn't matter once the shafts were pulled. Also there is no guarantee that it will not be raining or wet ground when I get there, another good reason to pull shafts.

84cucv, Westech did the same thing to his M1008 dragging it to the Aberdeen rally a few yrs back. Oh, Nonotagain, it's an 86. Off to Napa.

THATS WHY YOU NEVER PUT THE TRANS IN NEUTRAL WHEN TOWING! You only put the transfer case in Neutral. Having said that, I towed my M1008 800 miles with out dropping the drive shaft. Bad Idea, I cooked the transfer case to the point of boiling the ATF out of it. I took the shaft out and finished my trip. When I got home all I did was fill it back up and hook up the drive shaft. Not a problem, worked great.

I'd be worried about the wheel bearings, unless you overfill the axle, the drive shaft comes out very easy, undo the bolts and wire it up under the truck.

Yeah, I'm aware of that Ed, that's why the caps will have a plug to top off GO in the bearing recess area. FWIW I've towed bunches of these 14 bolts with shafts pulled, it's just been over 20 years and I don't have the caps anymore or a 14 bolt to mock them up with. Just for laughs, my first 14 Bolt FF disc brake conversion was in the early 80's. I had to fab everything. A few folks thought it was a waste but clean brakes after a day of muddin was worth the effort. How did I know 10 or 15 years later they would be making kits.

KennyW, you were sure right. I called Kert today and he was very pleasant. They are like $12 shipped to the door. Not even worth trying to fab up at that price. They will get more of my money in the future.
