Hauling wood again. 15,000lbs

Went on the annual wood hauling mission, using the new trailer and sides. 280 miles round trip. Only problem was my dumb butt running out of fuel. Not a big problem, Dad was driving separate, so now I have another 5 gallon fuel can.

Picked up 6 bundles of slab wood, 4-6 feet in dia, and 10-14 foot long. Stopped by a scale on the way back, 34,000 lbs. Truck is 13,000, and trailer is 6000. Both the truck and the trailer had 7,500lbs of wood on each of them. Not bad for 60 bucks.

Could hold 55 on the flats, and most hills were 30-40mph. Truck and trailer handled great, and the brakes could lock up the truck and trailer tires.

Where did you get the wood? I could use some of that at that rate for the winter. The 814 should be able to take all that in the bed I would think.

Cripe, a single vs duals hijack? I will throw my opinion in. I like singles.

Wood is in quaker city. Near 70/77 interchange.

Don't mean to "Hijack" your thread. But I was planning on doing the same thing with NDT 11.00-20's also. You like the singles mind a couple questions? How is the performance compared to 9.00-20 duals? You had a good load of slabs on, hows it handle the weight? Get around any better or worse? The little higher gear ratio bother the performance running through the gears? Dose it bind and bang any more or less. Any thing other info would be great.
I use my Deuce to haul firewood also, need to find some troop seats or make some side boards. A lot of messing around to get a decent load on.

Mark, he has kept up with us at Haspin and with the 135 rim offset, it is a wider stance than normal. If I didn't have hemtt rims to convert, I would go this route. He has a pyro and tuned the motor, so no, it doesn't detract from the power at all.
Also, I think we might have some of the troop seat uprights. No seats, just the metal that slides in the bed.

That's pretty darned good with that kind of weight. My deuce won't do near that. Guess it's time for a pyro and a little screw turning ;-). What's your EGT running on the hills?

Beaubeau and I were hauling tree-length wood to a yard last week using his slick GL setup: an aircraft tug (the REALLY ugly ones, with Allis-Chalmers 4 cyl. diesel & 1100-20 rubber, 4 wheel steering) and a modified bolster trailer. One of our loads netted 12.5 tons of wood. Pretty slick setup, that little 100hp 4 cyl. and Allison 4-speed auto worked great! It was only about a mile to the wood yard, and the tug is registered with tractor plates. Nothing like putting old MV iron to work.

There may be safety in duals, but when you run off road, the deuce can be a bear to control on side hills, in mud and deep snow. The duals can't follow the front wheels ruts, and with less weight or no weight the rear ends tend to float around wickedly and sometimes won't get traction. The super singles with the hubs flipped tend to go in the front wheels ruts, and if you get a flat, well, you're going to have to stop and change them whether they are duals or singles. The Army on the M35A3's sure didn't see a lot of sense in duals. In any case, it's just my .02 worth from experience in construction and logging work with the deuces......:-D

No way I'm breaking those bands. It's a big game of pick up sticks if you do that!

Singles do help on side slopes in the woods. But it's a fine line to find a place where singles make it through, and duals don't.

Don't remember what the 11's are rated at, but it was way over what the deuce was rated to carry. Truck turns better, and it's a heck of alot easier to work on the brakes. Also cheaper to buy 6 instead of 10 tires. The 11's add 10% road speed.

I don't notice any power loss, but my truck is turned up. Pyro runs 1100-1125 on a long hill, and I just put a D-turbo on, changed the head gasket, adjusted valves and turned the fuel up from the C-turbo. There was a hill I was down to 20mph on. I was really surprised at how well it pulled, I've pulled a lot of stuff, and it did great.

OK Stretch,

You should have said you were coming down here to steal my firewood....I could have had a beer waiting on you or something. Which mill did you get the slabs from? I know of about 3 or 4 right here close to home.

There's 30 miles between towns, and I just got on the 4 lane. Look at the gauge and thought, I better get fuel. Didn't want to turn around so tried for the next town. Missed it by 4 miles.

When I find some 11's I'll let you know Westy. I only need 15!
