395/85R20 Goodyears on a 5 ton

Many have put 16R20 tires on their 5 tons (myself included), but sometimes a 16R20 is too much tire for a M818 due to trailer clearance, loss of power when pulling and general looks on the short wheel base tractor.

This M818 has Goodyear 395/85R20 MVT tires on it and I drove it a few hundred miles cruising comfortably at 60 mph. I give this tire size (aka 15.5/80R20) a big thumbs up! [thumbzup]

I have been considering doing something like this. To have a second set of tires when I need to either do some HEAVY hauling, or if I will be towing a lot through the hills.
I just don't want to loose my cruising speed that the 16's offer, and the COST of a second set of rims and tires are not in my budget at the moment.

Ok, cruise at 60 mph, at what rpm? And how is your mileage? I went from 5 mpg with stock 11R20 XLs, to 7+ mpg with the 16.00R20's! That is a big difference in fuel cost right there, let me tell you. And the added range is always a nice bonus.

Oh yeah, they look NICE on that truck!
How do you like the way they ride?
And how much more power do you think you have compared to stock and the big tires?

Thanks for the info, I was just looking around for some 14R20's for my M816 and was debating on 16's or not. Those are about 46" right? Whats the load rating on those?

yeah about 46-47" tall about 15.5" wide. I think the Michelin xml 395/85r20 is around 57xx pounds a piece, i think. Take it with a grain of salt though, i don't know for sure.

i think the only 5 ton that would look in preportion to 1600's would a 814, but i have never seen an 814 with 1600's, but i have seen 818s. 816s. 813s, they all look nice as hell and would want one. but the tires look a little to big.

the 395s look nice btw.

The rims in the pics are 2 piece FMTV rims. I do have some of the new HEMTT 2 piece rims left. Most are being recentered for the deuces.

Damn if I was close I jump on that deal. What do you think shipping to kansas would run? If I could get them on a SS daisy chain Id be willing to wait on them for that price.

does anyone know what the diffrent backspacing is for the m924 vs hemett vs mtv wheels? Also if the 16x20 rub at full turn? Want to put bigger tires on my 818 & 816 and still use them hard.
