40,000# winch on deuce?

Question for all the winch / winching experts:

Anyone ever install a 40K winch on the front of a deuce or possibly a bobber? It should fit based on ruff dimensions. May have to do some bumper mods. I don't need it, may seldom use it but have access to a complete one. The weight will be major but shouldn't be over the "limits" of the front axle or springs.

Overkill... yes but do able within reason?

What 40,000lb winch are you looking at? The 45,000 lb winch came on the back of the 5 ton wreckers (M816, M62, M543) and are driven with a shaft to a gearbox and a sprocket chain drive to the winch. Thats a tall winch for the front of a deuce. Also you have to think about the weight rating on your front tires especially if you have stock 9.00 x 20's.

Nevermind the tires. The deuce with a stock winch is borderline at putting the front axle over their weight limit. The bigger winch would probably cause problems with the front axle along with the tires. Your steering would really get touch also.

ive seen offroad only 5tons with spraying equipment(on a farm near one of my wheeling spots) handing off of the front of the truck running duals up front to offset the added weight. ive never seen the truck out when the fields are muddy, so i dont think they were added for extra float.

dont know if a deuce can run dually fronts, but if it could, it would help with the weight factor. altho i would recomend some power steering.

TOO BIG. I put a 20K on mine and was able to nest it in by moving the radiator back (shorter V8 engine) and that's the only way that thing looks appropriate. The 40 is a way bigger animal yet.

Adding duals is a way to make the front float only. The axle will still be overloaded no matter how many tires you put on the front. BTW it can be done and there are military pictures with a deuce made up with duals in front. When I drove a deuce in Desert Storm I would get lazy and not air the tires down. Sometimes I would get stuck going forward but could always back out. I was also towing a water buffalo at the time.

I have a 45000 LBS winch on my 5 ton. I had to lengthen the front frame and double frame it. I still have to find the bearing box to finsh hooking it up.
Nice! That looks like it darn near chokes off your rad. air flow. I swore the guy told me it was a 40k but the bumper setup on yours is similar to what we would have to do.

Thanks to all for the input and perspectives. It is major overkill but the only winch available nearby. Might just be too big though.....decisions decisions.
