I didn't think they were going to start replacing the HMMWV until 2012, but I saw 5 JLTVs on semis headed south this week. They starting to phase out the HMMWV early?
Could be test vehicles. At the start of every contract, they produce piles of vehicles to test out under all sorts of driving conditions and terrains. Perhaps they are just making a few dozen/hundred to send out into the field prior to official acceptance/production....

Uparmoreds role south through here all the time, but this week when I started seeing the JLTVs I started thinking about it and haven't seen a load of HMMWVs in a few weeks now. Which is why I was thinking that maybe the JLTV went into production. I will keep my eyes open for both now.

Various jeeps used were better than walking, for 3 guys. And narrow. Little else to recommend them for military use. You couldn't give me an M151.

I think the main reason they are being phased out just after 20 years of service is that they cannot handle the combat situations that we face today. They where not designed to handle ambush style attacks and up-armoring them puts too much strain on the vehicle and increase the incidence of mechanical failure.

What good is a truck that doesn't run, and constantly has major issues when it does? My problem with the M998 and variants is that the use the flawed system of the cucv and design parameter ie auto trans. ect.. M-151 we had during my stint would go places that m998 wouldn't, they where constanly stuck broke down, the 151 could be fixed with the min. of equipment once myself and three other men( 2 carpenters 1 elect. & 1 Plumber) swap out the engines of 3 m151 in 4 hrs in drmo yard with only a small incomplete tool box a chain a few skids and a 4x4. IMO you need alot more to accomplished this with M-998. I just feel they missed the the idea of scale and servibilty when it was introduced.
