HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! Tried to search the answers and could not find them.

1. So I have never seen my GEN 2 light come on and am guessing I need a new bulb, what is the type/model number do I need?

2. Wait light illuminates as it should but sometimes during increased rpm it comes back on while driving, why? What should I look for?

3. In the near future I will need to replace my mufflers, are there any performance ones I should look at or just go with something similar to stock?

1. Mine work so I have not had to go through the dash. The TM's should help on this but someone here on SS should be along to get you that number shortly.

2. As a guess???, ground issue or GP relay going bad?

3. I'd go with the factory setup, anything less will make it louder than it already is. Dont think it would increase performance either, IMO

1. It should come on when the ignition is in RUN. If it doesn't the Gen2 alternator won't produce voltage. The bulb is a standard 194 just like all of the rest of the dash bulbs and the side marker lights.

2. Does it come on while the engine is still cold or while warm? The glow plugs are designed to cycle while the engine is cold to improve fuel burning.

3. Free flowing mufflers would be fine, but unless you're planning to put a turbo on it, you are not going to see too much improvement over stock.

Joe

The "WAIT"light should only illuminate when the key is ON and the engine is OFF. As soon as you turn the key to ON, it should go out and stay out whether the engine is cold, hot running or stopped. I'm too full of turkey to try and muddle through to an answer for why it is on when the engine is running. Go get another beer and it won't seem so important....

Both generator lights should illuminate when the key is ON and the engine is OFF and when the engine is first running but has not run at high enough RPMs to make full power. If it illuminates at any other time you have some troubleshooting to do. If you follow the instructions on the back of the driver sun side visor and put the pedal half way to the floor when it is above 32 degrees outside and all the way to the floor when it is below 32 degrees the engine should rev enough on starting to extinguish the generator lights. Note that the instructions on the visor and in the Operator Manual do NOT distinguish between a cold engine or a hot engine. However if, like most of us, you start a warm engine without benefit of extra throttle, you may have to rev the engine to extinguish the lights.

For LTWVARNG, your truck had a light socket when it was made. The bulb is a bayonet style that pushes into the socket and the socket twists into a cam lock behind the dash. Remove the screws that hold the dash panel, tilt it forward and go hunting. That is a lot easier than standing on you head with a flashlight looking from below and you won't spill your beer.

194 style lamps are available in different wattages. We have worked on some trucks that needed to have lower wattage lamps installed to keep them from blowing. In 25 years we've never been able to isolate a single specific cause that could be fixed to prevent it so, if the lamps keep blowing do a quick online search for lower wattage lamps. If it's a problem finding them, post a reply or PM me. My son Chris probably knows the available wattages and lamp numbers off the top of his head.

Don't worry about making more noise with a straight through muffler. Most of the noise from the the engine is just that, engine clatter and the exhaust difference won't matter.

Mine is missing that light socket completely. It's not there. I've had the dash and cluster off. The connections were corroded. And that solved some of the problems but now I've created some new ones. Whoever had it before rewired some stuff and its not right.

Interesting. You should be able to strip the wires and put a new one in??

Run to the junkyard and pull one from any other GM vehicle instrument cluster. In the short term, you could pull one from one of the other sockets like the 4WD light.

Gen 2 is only for the second battery that runs the 24V side of things which if you don't have a military radio is the starter and glow plugs won't get run to far down. A non-functional alt could just be the bulb, it's the cheapest thing to try first.

The light will stay on immediately after startup because the alt hasn't made enough voltage to trip the switch off. When you rev the engine, it boosts the voltage and makes the light go off.

The WAIT light can come on for a second a couple of times after startup as the plugs cycle to improve combustion in a cold engine. Once it is up to temp, it shouldn't come on again. How long is yours coming on for?

Joe

When cold it stays on till heat is blowing from the heater and then flickers (if I hit bumps it flickers off and on too) today it was solid for about ten miles from cold, 37 degrees out. (wait light)

Will for sure pull the bulb, 24V battery dies every three days or so.

Yea, there's a problem with the glow plug system. I'm not sure where to check first because that isn't covered in the -20TM... I would suggest checking the wiring to make sure it's all ok and connected properly.

I'll do a little more thinking and see if I can come up with anything else to check.

I do have a military radio set up....and have used it alot. I think the alt is still charging the battery..has to. I dont think missing a bulb affects it at all????

Well, to check you could put a voltmeter on the rear battery and see what voltage you get while running. Should be 14V or so.

Everything I've read about the GM system says that the bulb has to be functioning in order for the system to charge.

Joe
