Frightening, Really.

I first got a deuce in late 2006 and joined here in January 2007.

I started slowly, learning and replacing parts. cranetruck was a huge help with the mysteries of electric failures and cures.

When lights did not work, I learned about grounds. When brakes needed checking, I learned how.

So, this morning I was out checking the two deuces fluids, batteries and such. I turned on the electric power for the lights on one deuce and the turn signals went blink, then dead. Turn signal left, blink then dead. Turn signal right, blink then dead.

I went to the garage, got the spare flasher, a screw driver and a 7/16 wrench, replaced the flasher and blinky blinky. It took a total of 15 minutes from finding the problem to solving it.

I think I am becoming an old hand at this keeping a deuce running. Frightening, really.

For me and my experience with the deuce and the multi engine its one of apprehension and pleasure.I think its a bitchen truck and I love driving it but the engine is really new to me.Like the sounds it makes,always wondering,'is that a normal sound?I dont think it was there last time I ran it etc. etc.Always thinking the worst,will it run away while I'm out,throw a rod,why is there always a bit of oil under the IP that drips on the winch drive shaft,and why is the blow-by hose always damp with oil.Like I said,its a real pleasure to drive but always that thought of an engine failure,then what.

Just what runs through my mind when behind the wheel.

The really good thing about this truck is that its design is relatively simple and it is stuff that you can still work on without having to hook a PC up to it. Just heavy, but very simple design. Thats why they last so long....the KISS method.

Deuce flashers seem to have a reliability problem. I have to cycle mine L-off-R a couple of times before it will flash... After I get it started working, it is fine until it sits for a week...

I am pretty sure I can fix them, but I would like to have a dead flasher to experiment on, and learn from .... before I have to fix my sole and only flasher.

If you are just going to toss your bad flasher, I would like to have it... Who knows, I might be able to help others with a prescription for fixing bad flashers?

One thing I have learned isto be suspicious of all the connections. As Bjorn suggests, make sure all the grounds are good. Usually wiggling connectors/unplugging and plugging back in will make things work for a bit. Clean everything! I use 400 grit paper on the exposed connectors and conductive grease is very helpful too. Take a look inside and see what has aged/gotten dirty...

Bjorn put me onto that a couple of years ago. I have all new bolts, nuts and inside/outside star washers on the grounds.

Well said. Same for me. I am not a pessimist by nature, but I look at my truck, there are no leaks, the brake pedal is firm, the engine starts right up - and I am asking myself "what did I overlook?".

I used to be the same way! It happens to others. But, of late, I have become convinced that anything goes wrong, I can fix.

Bjorn is wonderful on electronics. Others have had the same problems I have. This is a great site. We need to support it.

I think I started on the prevention stage from early on. I got all the spin on filter kits from JT and have been very satisfied with their performance.

Not living in a cold climate, semi arid, means I do not have to worry about heating the engine oil in winter. So, the jatonka spin on oil filters work great here. If I lived amongst the heathen Yankees I would probably have a magnetic heater device for that along with the spin on filters.

I also got the coolant filter kit from ODIron to clean the crud in the coolant. I was very pleased yesterday to find no gunk in the coolant when I added anti-freeze. I also use the coolant filter with the SCA for better cooling in the diesel engine.

Putting the remote BFS reservoir on was the latest upgrade to the trucks. I think that may be as important a safety issue as exists on the deuce.

But, you learn and learn some more from this site. The things we do right and wrong are all on display here daily.
