setting timing

I got my truck running today for the first time and It sounded like a gas motor spewing black smoke. The person helping me wants to start from scratch and set everything from top dead center. Right now I'm at my parents house and for some reason the manuals wont work for me. Can anyone help????

Can anyone copy and paste the sections I need??

IP timing on a 6.2 ? Very easy. Line up the scribed marks on the IP and the timing cover case and go from there. There is actually a timing light made by Kent Moore for timing these beasts but I have never had the pleasure. I usually start with the marks lined up and end up bumping it a slight to the drivers side . It should start nicely and sound a little marbly. It's it's too quiet and hard to start it's probably like me...retarded...:D

BTW Black smoke is too much fuel or not enough air. we ahhh... wern't screwing with that little screw on the side looking for more SOP were we ???;-)

No I know nothing about diesels we are trying to get it back to factory. All I know it looked like a dodge cummins all juiced up then stalled on oits own. I found the lines you were talking about and they looked go. I think Im going to take the injector pump off and have it tested. Do I have to take the front cover off? It seems like there is something still attached.

Injector pump removal: (from memory, but check the TM. It covers it.)
-Disconnect the batteries
-Disconnect the IP solenoid (pink wire)
-Remove the air cleaner
-Remove the CDR valve assembly (valve, hoses and bracket)
-Disconnect the vacuum pump lines from the pump modulator on the side of the IP
-Remove the intake manifold and injector line clips
-Stuff rags in the intake ports to keep junk from falling into the block
-Remove the intake gaskets and scrape them clean
-Disconnect the injector lines (you'll probably need a crows foot wrench to get at the bottom lines)
-Remove the three bolts that hold the IP to the crankcase. You'll probably need a flex-head ratcheting wrench to get the bottom one on the driver side. $12 at O'Reilly or Lowe's, etc.
-Remove the oil fill tube bracket and pop out the oil fill tube
-Using a big (7/8" I think) socket and breaker bar turn the engine over by hand until the bolts in the oil fill tube opening line up where you can reach them. There are three. It helps to have someone tell you when they're lined up. -Remove them using a magnetic socket. If you drop them into the timing cover you've turned an hour job into a massive project of removing the radiator, alts, and pretty much everything else to get the timing cover off and try to find them before they ruin a bunch of stuff.
-Now you can pull the pump off.

To replace it you just do everything in reverse, but you have to get the pin on the pump to line up with the little hole inside the crankcase/oil fill tube opening. Make take a little jimmying around, and best with 2 people and a good flashlight.

Be sure to put the heavy duty intake gaskets on (they have the metal square in the center hole).

To set the timing, just line up the scribed mark on the pump with the one on the crankcase. Or take it to a diesel shop and pay them $35 to do the timing with their gauges, etc.

Sorry to hear about your glow plugs. Were you able to get the pieces out?

A friend of mine bought a 1028 out of Fort Drum last summer. Had all sorts of problems. One of them was that the fuel in the tank was mostly gasoline. Just goes to show, don't assume anything is normal. I would not have believed it if I had not smelt it myself. Probably not your problem, but something to check. Good luck.

yea i pulled off the cover and going to start from square one, and put a new water pump in it while i have everything off. Then have the injectors tested and injection pump tested. Then go from there.

you don't need to pull the cover, just the filler neck. Pensacola diesel gets about 350$ for a reman. Their Ips are good, their injectors suck.
