I went to a vermont state vehicle auction and there was a cucv sitting there trying to start itself with nobody in it. Everybody else is like running away and stupid ed jumps in and removes the starter relay. That was the problem I found. hope this helps.

There is a relay(silver) under the dash, to the left of the ash tray. remove and replace it. Ask for an AC40 relay for a stock replacement.

There is a post here, that explains in detail, how to replace that relay with a higher amp rated relay. I suggest you consider that modification eventually.

starter relay underdash close to where normal chev radio is installed. its the silvercolored part. It's points are burn't -rushed and are "stuck". Cheap fix.

Replace the relay as some have already said. For those that have this happen a sharp hit to the area under the dash under where the relay is located will sometimes get it unstuck. If you cant get it with a couple of hits start pulling the wires out of the solenoid before it takes out the starter. There are two more relays under there also. One runs the voltage gauge while the other runs the passenger's side alternator. All these relays take the 12 volt start and run impulses and put out 24 volt for the stuff.

Everyone should replace the Starter Solenoid "silver"RELAY.
A whole 6.00 for the AC40 relay at advance auto parts.
There are 3 bolts (7/16 socket) in a "silver" metal plate under radio mount area
that are holding 3 relays.
One is the ("silver" rectangular) starter solenoid relay
and 2 are identical black square relays.
After installing the AC40 relay I left it hanging out radio cut out plate to quickly detach
if it ever failed and stuck shut "closed circuit" thus leaving the starter engaged!!!

Of those 2 identical "black" square relays
one is for voltage indicator
and the other is for the light in dash for #2 generator aka the passenger side alternator.
If you ever have an issue with either you can switch those relays temporarily to see if you have a bad relay!

To upgrade to a very reliable contact you must cut the plug for the starter solenoid relay AND --> do this

DogHead and the General are the Men!!!! Yup....don't let the little silver relay burn your wiring harness up!

ALWAYS carry a wrench in your glovebox to undo your battery terminal at the front battery....just-in-case...

Thanks for the compliment.

It is actually faster and safer to leave your stock relay unbolted and hanging under the dash. Then, in an emergency(relay sticks on), you can just unplug it with no tools and replace it. If your gonna run it stock, keep a spare in the glove-box.

I really suggest upgrading it( link posted in post # 5). I have never heard of a failure with the upgrade.
