Post purchase observations and realization

I have spent the past few days going over my first purchase, restoring every little detail that I see or think of, and have come to some opinions and realizations:

These trucks are not at all like the 416 Unimog. No power steering, 2 tons heavier, an extra axle to swing and a wide body and mirrors all add up to make for some serious driver re-training. I'm using low turning speeds until I get my calibration dialed in for how fast I can spin the wheel to make corners.

I hope I hope I hope I never have to do any drive train work. The assemblies are absolutely enormous, and impossible to muscle. I was checking the under carriage for loose nuts and bolts and never used a wrench under 3/4". I'll need to make a cheater bar for my 3/4" drive socket set ratchet! Shoot, even the tail gate on the bed is dangerous to open with one person if you are not prepared! I think I'll need a fork lift or gantry to raise and lower the drop sides!

I got lucky with a non-inspected auction purchase. Really lucky. It leaks a little oil here and there, and the body has a half dozen patch panels, but the basics are solid. My purchase list to complete the restoration of all systems consists of wiper arms with blades and a hood latch. I'm am also seeking a few items that are not demonstrated in the parts list TM 9-2320-361-24P. Maybe a fellow reader can point me in the right direction on where to obtain these items:

Photo exhibit A: The drop sides and tail gate do not use securing hooks as per the TM. Instead these threaded Tee bars with hand nuts are used. I need 4 new Tee bars as mine are all bent and stretched.

Photo exhibit B) In an effort to improve the instrument illumination, I disassembled the gauge panel and cleaned the gauge windows to let in more light. While it was apart, I scraped off the pealing coat of paint from the gauge panel. I now have two dash colors, but the printed info on the original dash looks more appealing to me.

Photo exhibit C) However, the red dash illumination light lenses as they are do not reflect much light latterly. Most of the light escapes into the cabin. Are there different red lenses made with a reflective surface or is there a cap to reflect more light back in and latterly out into the gauge windows? And, where can I buy more of the gaskets for sealing the caps against the panel?

Thanks guys,

Rick

Actually the dropsides will surprise you, easier to swing with one person than the tailgate. Don't ask me why, but it just is. Congrats on the new truck, oh and those t handles can be nice....

Congrats on your new purchase, I can't be of much help to you other than with the dash lights...the two lights you have in your dash are missing the covers that go on them.

The covers for those lights should look just like the cover on the high beam indicator...except they will NOT have the little "hole" in the center to allow light into the cab. ALL of the light from those two lights should be deflected behind the dash.

Notice the two pictures, these are of my trucks panel. The two "instrument" lights have the covers on them. In the second picture, you can see the lights circled in red and the "low air" light is actually on in this picture. The two "instrument" lights do not have the "hole" I mentioned, and are circled with yellow

Speddmon,

Thanks bro. Any idea where I can get detail parts like those caps, and some other small items on my list?

instrument lighting in general is poor on these trucks. I notched a piece of 1/4" thick 3.5" aluminum relay rack panel so it would fit flat on the dask and go around the left side drivers defroster vent. I mounted a low power LED marking light strip on the underside so the light from it hits the front of the guages but is not visible by the driver. This worked very well. The topside of the panel also make a good place to put a pyro and boost guage, etc.

You posted your described mod, as I recall. If that was you congrats on a good idea, I think it's awesome. For me, I'd like to go as far as I can with what is currently installed. I have a ways to go to get maximum light onto the gauges using the stock illumination. Pyro and boost gauges would be on my list, but for most of my driving here in the jungle keeps me out of long pulls on the throttle. Shoot, I'm in low range most of the time, dodging low trees and vines.

Cheers,

Rick

Thanks! I just checked their pages on the M35, and they list the entire drop-side chain assemblies but it says they are out of stock. When did you purchase yours?

I did not locate the lens covers on the web parts list, so I'll call them to be sure. I have some other needed items anyway, might as well give them the biz.

Sure did. GL got me a corrected SF-97 and supporting documents within 4 weeks. All in all it was in Crowley's yard for an un-planned 35 days, some of which they let me slide on. In all, my error was not too costly, and I certainly know better for next time: Check the SF97!!!

Thanks again for offering to assist. It's good to know there are good folk like yourself out there.

Anytime Rick. Since no one can own just one, keep my number in case you need to ship through Port Everglades in the future.
