Is My Turbo Missing Something? (Pic)

I finally opened up the hood today. Is the oily pipe sticking out of the bottom of the turbo supposed to be like that? It kind of looks like some kind of hose should connect to it & take something bad somewhere else. There seems to be an awful lot of room in that general area. Am I missing something important?

thats not sticking out of the turbo its the draft tube an ussually it has a hose on it that runs in dowm past the axle .unless the truck has a fording kit then it is run back to the air cleaner.

That is actually not part of the turbo. It's the road draft tube and if you follow it, it comes off of the valve covers.

I have that tube also and appears to missing the rest. I occassionally see smoke coming out of it which smells like burning oil and it spits oily debris. Is this normal? Should I extend the tube further down to the ground? :roll:

Oh so it's like a pcv valve for the valve cover? Maybe that's why the rear seal started leaking on the way home. Now the entire bell housing (& maybe the clutch?) is covered in oil.

I just lifted the hood with one hand, then snapped the pic with the other. So I didn't get a good look at the pipe since it's dark outside.

Then it's ok to leave it like that?

The extra pipe on the air filter canister is for the compressor.

Unless the tube is pluged it would not have anything to do with rear seal leaking. It is a crankcase vent.

Does this engine have some form of PCV to relieve blowby pressure? I haven't actually climbed up into the hood to look. I guess it doesn't really matter. The rear seal has to be replaced. Do you know if it is a two piece rear seal that I can replace by dropping the pan? Or is it a seal that requires flywheel removal?

You answered your own question back a bit yes road draft tube is crank case / motor breather. Yes one pice and no the clutch should be fine the leak is on one side of the flyweel and clutch is on the outher.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. If you catch the leak soon enough, the clutch should be OK. If you continue to drive it and the disc gets soaked, a new clutch will be in order. If I were there doing a rear seal, i'd do a clutch at the same time unless it looked like new when it was taken out. I HATE to do things twice!

Where I live there are all kinds of insects and little critters that see the road draft tube / hose as a new domicile. I made a simple but effective mod by zip tying a small piece of fine screen over the end. Still lets out vapor so no pressure buildup but no homesteaders either. Black screen and zip tie so it isn't even noticeable.
