Throttle Issue,, Weird

Well I had gotten home from work early, my honey do list had been finished over the weekend, it's pushing 60 degrees, I wanted to take the Deuce for a spin.
I pulled out on my road which has a 45 MPH limit ( 2 lane country road)and I'm about a mile from the house, tractor trailer flies up behind me doing 60 and obviously wanting me to do the same, Needless to say I stayed at 45, he's on my tail, and I start crawling a small hill, and the deuce slowly then suddenly lost power, like the rug was pulled out from under her, then all of a sudden goes full throttle . ( She thought she was a Toyota) In a frantic scuffle tapping the throttle did nothing, I was able to regulate power with the shutdown knob.

After getting control I was able to slow down and leave the hotfoot Peterbuilt around me,( Gave me the finger ) I was able to back into a driveway, and get her spun around, all while turning the wheel, shifting and regulating power with the shutdown, all while my cell phone was ringing , ( wife calling) I had found that if I got it to idle it would be ok for a few seconds, then it would want to go full throttle,, I crawled out of the persons driveway in idle, and shifted enough to keep rpm's down, but not to lug, and regulate the shutdown, I got her home , and found the pin on the throttle linkage to the injection pump had fallen out,

I replaced with a 5/16 grade 8 bolt and doublenutted , and she's good as new, seems to me it was just simply a pin with a cotter on the end.
Cant imagine the truck going thirty some years, and the throttle pin falls out.

No complaints, just wanted to share my nailbiter story.

If you ever see Mr. Peterbilt again, let him know a proper military honor should be rendered to your old war horse rather than his disrespectful one finger salute. I "bet a dollar to donuts" your deuce has been around a lot longer that his Pete.

I had that same thing happen! The pin fell out and a guy pulled up next to me and just walked over to the deuce and said " I have that fix be right back " before I could even see what he was talking about. He had started on about getting it fixed. I asked what gives did this happen to him. He just said I work at a junk yard and an IP is an IP .

lucky that the guy behind my deuce was a nice guy that knows the OD iron commands respect
just be the green that is painted on it and which it stands.

Thanks for sharing that story. I'll be sure to go out tomorrow and check all my deuces over. Hate to have that happen when the wife decides to finally take her truck out

Similar situation Sunday
Fired one of the trucks up as I touched the throttle
the pedal hit the floor and the motor wound right up fast!
Freaked , I grabbed the shut down and pulled the T right off, which went flying out the door and in the snow (yeah still some around)

This wasn't the pin, it was the threads at the end of the rod that goes to the pedal, it came undone! and when it did the return spring tension caused the rest of it to flip back and open the throttle.
Didn't notice anything amiss on my prefire visual inspection, gonna have to add checking the pedal linkage to the pre start list, that and pin the T handles to the shut down cables on my trucks.
Also thinking of reconfiguring the return springs so that it can not do that .

At least you two are much smarter than the Toyota Prius driver in California who had no idea how to shut off his car for 20 minutes when the accelerator stuck.

the good part is it won't over rev so don't worry about it whan it happens. just a suggestion, reset the high idle on your trucks to 2550, which is more than generous, and then you can just hold it on the floor to act as a 'cruise control'.

You're right, the old Deuce has ben around allot longer than his pete, in my area of the woods we have allot of silt haulers running around, and they get pissy when you slow them down, but 60mph on a 45mph two lane country road with houses and schoolbuses is BS.

I ll though however let him know that next time He's in CB range!!!

Good to hear you handled the run away throttle in an approved manner.... So much for Peterbuilt's, I guess his Viagra was kicking in...! Now we have one more thing to check on the trucks... Everything ages, including cotter keys.
