M816 Wrecker towing an M817 Dumptruck

My M817 from the Albany, GA GL sale a few weeks ago showed up yesterday, approx 10 AM. A friend helped my get it hooked and back to the house before the rain showed up.

I have to unload the GL trucks that I buy at a local school's parking lot because most drivers can't get an 18 wheeler into my subdivision, and it is a little more low profile.

Anyway, here's the pics..

The wrecker starts easier and doesn't leak as much oil.

It did.

The turn shown in the video is why most drivers can't get a tractor trailer to my house (I can, but that's a whole other story).

I got the goodie package and think it was well worth the price.

It was actually a fairly quick drive until I tried to tow it up a 20% grade in 2nd...

I'm just glad that the clutch held when I jammed it into 1st, half-way up the hill (needless to say, the old, glazed facing on the clutch lining was quickly smoked off leaving some nice, new lining to grab the flywheel).

Towing on level ground is easy, going up (and down) steep hills is an entirely different story.

After that, it was cake.

not necessary if you don't put air to it and I don't remember seeing air lines in his pics.

So that is the deal, huh? Never thought of that. When doing a lift tow on 5 ton, you only need to disconnect if air lines are hooked up?

Nope, driveshaft was not disconnected (only had to go 1-1/2 miles). Did not put air to it for the tow.

Transfer case was in nuetral, as was the transmission.

I had no idea that the sprag ONLY functions when the air system is charged. I looked into a bit and JWALLER is definitely correct...no air and the sprag stays in a neutral position (neither forward nor reverse). Still, that was a surprise. You learn something new each day!
