Deuce air cleaner modifiacation W/LDS engine

I put a LDS engine in my deuce last spring. I just put a K& N filter RU-3060 it is 848 cfm .the stock air filter is 410 cfm .Most of you know the LDS calls for more CFM .See pic's of what i did ,The added air intake tube will be extended out belowair filter 038.JPG

Very interesting!

So the ring resting against the filter in the third from the bottom picture is a spacer you made so it'll fit onto the Deuce's housing neck OD?

If so, what is that spacer made of?

I went to Menards the couplers they used to put pvc pipe together.I cut one inch ring . The K& N neck is 6 inch ID .On the deuce housing it's 5 1/2 inches od . Thats way the rubber ring.

The 3 inch I added a hose will run to the front under the head light.the stock intake on the side is still there ,what air temp? the added 3 inch to be sure it will breath easier

I would have to think it will help the perfomance ,I haven't had it out yet. I did run it down the road with the stock air cleaner, and then removed the air cleaner . The pyro temp went down. About water the intake will come out right below the headlight ,it will have a deflector so rain won't go in kinda the same as the stock air intake. The LDS engine needs I believe 510 to 550 cfm . My TM manual is at my shop . I'll post a pic of the finished intake. I do believe with only 410 cfm I had do someting the improve air flow.I still want the stock look as much as possible,all our trucks are for show.

I put a K&N on my 1997 powerstroke and was not happy with the performance. Also, the oil residue it required seemed to collect dust and became clogged. Long story short I went back to paper. I hope it performs better in your application.

Are you thinking of modifing the exhaust or turing up the fuel?

that is the point of the K&N, it used oil to trap the dirt rather than paper media, you then wash it out and re-oil and you are good to go again.

I don't own one, I'm lookin for one so I'm still learning but I am hearing how the turbo is a bit of a dog. The much bigger filter should help with spool up. I would be slightly worried about the K&N, they are prone to dusting turbos in very dusty areas. If you could find it I would run a prefilter on it.

Definately interested in this mod. Post some more pics when ya get it done. Looking good so far. I have ran K&N on every car and truck I could and love them. Pay for themselves rather quickly, just gotta keep them clean.

Yeah they can... I noticed my truck (2008 F350) was smoking alot more than normal today actually.. mercy that thing was drity! I cleaned it and have it on the porch drying right now!

We are running a modified and turned up 465 in one of our deuces. My son made acceleration runs with a new stock paper filter in the canister and without. We could not see much difference.

Notice any differences in spool up or boost at cruising? Also can be helpful for keeping EGT's down. Again, I'm still new to the game but it seems everyone is worried about EGT's and boost pressure when trying to mod but keep these motors together.

The best thing to do if you aren't going to change components are to increase airflow in and out of the motor. If you drop the rate at which your EGT's rise you can stay in it longer on hills, ect. What is everyone maxing out EGT's pre turbo? I have hit 1700 on my F350 for a breif second..

I checked my manual, TM-9-2815-210-34-2-1 The book says LDS 465-1, LDS-464-1A 450cfm, LDS-465-2 550cfm. Haven't seen anything or heard about LDS -465 -2 do they even exsist ? .I will post more pic's when I get it done ,wifes making me work. The manual I posted is a good for detail and spec's on engines

I have a K&N filter in my deuce, along with a digital egt gauge. Before the K&N my egts would run upto 760 when on it. Now it gets to 690. It definetly made a difference and I have more room to turn the fuel up....

Yes, they were built exclusively for the 1969 m656/xm757/xm791 8x8 trucks. Very few in existence...
The air cleaner on these trucks is of a 2-stage type, where fins or vanes set up a cyclone effect on the air to separate heavier particles, which are collected in the "dust pot" shown in the images and that was 40 years ago.

Don't think you'll notice much difference in the performance with a different filter unless you operate the truck under near full or full load.
To measure the efficiency of the filter, install a "vacuum" gauge and look at the readings for the different filters. Third image below shows the gauge I have in the M35 and it indicates about 3 to 4 inches of water mostly.
The restriction indicator on the dash, by the steering wheel shows red at about 20 inches...
