Tired but satisfied

My best looking truck, a sharp M35A2C, has been belly up with the buzzards circling it for a while. I swapped an air shift transfer case into it from a high mileage truck and it promptly croaked.

I got a good takeout transfer case from D8Dave last week and got around to putting it in yesterday.

I don't know how I managed to plan it this way but with 5 sons, none were in town so I did it without help.

It took about 6 hours, including draining and replacing the old lube, swapping over the parking brake and mounting brackets etc. Working by myself made for a lot of trips up and down to jockey the engine hoist and chain fall, line things up and do all the wrench work.

I took it for a drive around the farm for about 15 minutes and all seems OK so I'll put the plates on it and run it around the block a few times (4 miles a lap) and change the gear oil again. If all is well, I'll put the floor panel and passenger side bucket seat back in it and it'll be done.

I had the passenger side front windshield and window open so it was the first time I really heard it with the muffler. I like it. The engine note is less harsh and deeper in pitch.

Now I can move on to the "new" M813A1.

Definately is a labor of love to wrench on these old machines. Sore back, banged up knuckles, smashed thumbs, grease in my hair, sore neck, crap in my eyes, and lovely aroma of GL-1 on my clothes....doesn't get any better than this at the pharmacy.

It seems the transfer case is the weak link in this vehicle. Does it not have an oil slinger or pump in it? From the outside it sure looks beefy enough to handle rough treatment. I'm surprised how many posts that I've read here about transfer case problems.

This guy has a fantastic sounding tc, the 4213, that would pretty much be a bolt-in. But I have no clue where to find them, nor how much they cost.

The transfer cases in our Deuces are used in the competition 'monster' trucks that compete in dirt arenas. I don't know what would be more stout than that. ??

No pics needed. Look under your truck. That thing with all the U-joint yokes bolted to it is a transfer case.

At least it's easy to work under a Deuce. I also have an old bus. It's so darn close to the ground that I can't shimmy under that thing no matter how hard I try. And it's not because I'm a big fellow.
