A little help please, I just picked up a M1008 nice truck that starts and runs everytime, however the Volt gauge reads in the yellow then after a few min. comes up to green. The dash idiot lights never did work, Gen 1, Gen 2, 4x4 and the Oil light, so I was checking them to troubleshoot the lights and found that NONE of them had bulbs!!! How is this possible ?? Why would they do that, what kind of bulbs go to the lights. Also, the truck had a glow plug by pass installed so someone has been working on the truck. It seems to run fine and start everytime. :cookoo:

the engine has to reach about 1000 RPM to get the alternators to start chaging. This is fine! Replace the bulbs with 194 bulbs. Time to get the TM's and a repair manual.

Lights

Yes, thanks. What I was wondering was how the system was working with the dash lights missing as they are part of the original system, or maybe it's not working. But it does seem to be charging per the volt meter. Could somebody have by passed the dash lights?

More than likely the gens are not working. The idiot bulbs have to be installed and working for the alts to excite and start charging.

You can order the sockets from NAPA or Oreillys or others. NAPA LS-6501, Dorman 85836 5/8". The Gen2 and Fuel Gauge bulbs are 194, all others are 168 according to the parts manual.

Some one apparently needed the bulbs for another truck.

According to the -20p parts manual, the Gen2 bulb is a 194 and the rest are 168.

The 168 bulb is a brighter bulb because it is a higher wattage (5w) bulb than the 194 (3.8watt). Both are the exact same size.

NAPA has the sockets, LS-6501. They are also sold under the Dorman brand 85836. They are 5/8"

thank you sir!

You also hellped my nerves as I could not think of a good reason someone would take ALL the bulbs and sockets until you said they might have robbed them for another truck. But how in the **** could this thing run with no charging system?

Easy,

You just need enough juice in both batts to start the engine and then enough juice in the front batt to energize the fuel relay at the injector pump. Thats it. Alternators not required (for a short period of time).

All the other stuff is not needed to run (nice to have at night and when you want the brake lights to work....LOL)

Have you downloaded all the tech manuals? The -20 and -34 have electrical troubleshooting sections and all the wiring diagrams.

David
All of the Tech Manauls are available thru the Resources link on the top of the page.

But the easiest way to find them is on the CUCV Wiki thread that is at the top of the CUCV Forum.

Cucv - Steel Soldiers::Military Vehicles Supersite

Open the thread and roll your cursur over the link and download them from there. There are seven manuals listed.

LO 9-2320-289-12 is the Lubrication Order
TM 9-2320-289-10 is the Operator's Manual
TM 9-2320-289-20 is the Unit Maintenance Manual
TM 9-2320-289-20P is the Unit Parts Manual
TM 9-2320-289-34 is the Intermediate Maintenance Manual
TM 9-2320-289-34P is the Intermediate Parts Manual
TM 9-2815-237-34 is the Direct Support Manual for the 6.2L and 6.5L Diesels
