GL and PayPal

I just won my first auction and used pay pal to pay. I wanted to share my experience. I will start from the begining.

I waited to the last minute to bid. When I hit the place bid button and made me log into my paypal account to link it to GL. I did so and it let me place a bid and added 15minutes to the auction. Well 15 minutes later the gensets were mine. I looked around both GL and Paypal for a way to pay, I could find none.

So I used the live chat feature to contact a GL employee. I told them I chose paypal and I have yet to get a payment request or any invoice of any kind. They informed me I would get a invoice and my paypal would be charged within 24hours.

Fast forward to today. I get an email saying the money was taken from paypal and being taken from my checking account which is linked to paypal. Problem is I DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY IN CHECKING.

I call paypal and they pretty much tell me the transaction is being processed and can not be stopped. Thanks for nothing! I know calling GL wont get me very far, they will most likely flag my account and relist the items.

I never saw an option to determine where it pulled the money from. I have my checking and 3 credit cards link to my paypal account. I was planning to use my Credit card. So now I have to scramble to deposit enough in my account so I dont overdraft on monday.

So my advice from my experience is to NOT use paypal. Unless you only have one form of payment linked to paypal and that is the form of payment you wish to use.

Unlike Ebay it didnt ask me to send money to pay for the auction, it pretty much just went into my account and took it. I wanted to use the 3days I had to decide which card to put the purchase onto.

I believe you must set your intended account as the default account. Heidi today told me they charge the default account regardless of what is it, all they see is paypal. But I wish they would send an invoice that would allow you to choose.

You should have the money in your acount before you bid.
Hope you get it worked out.
Or maybe the genset will go cheeper next time it comes up for auction.

Well I guess its my fault for expecting them to operate more like Ebay. You have 3 days to make payment right? I should get to use those 3 days to decide when I wanna pay.

Also the "buyers premium" is ridiculous. What does that 10% go to anyway? Sales tax is no big deal, but it should be in the state in which the auction is taking place or where the item is located and must be picked up from.

I will chalk this one up as lessons learned, I guess you could say I "winged" it on this one.

When you win, log onto to paypal, select funding option. Do this pretty quick after auction closes. GL had a temporary authorization about 3 hours after auction for me, and paypal had the option to choose a funding source

This thread isnt about my spending habits, its about my experience with GL and paypal and not getting the opportunity to chose where the money to pay for the auction came from.

and FYI I have already deposited enough money into check to cover the debit.

You don't pay the sales tax in the state you won the item?! I have. I was shocked how high tax was when I bought a pallet of tow bars in Maine. I like the 6.5 here in Ohio much better.

:ditto:

I've always paid sales tax in the state the item is in. It's 9.75 here in TN. We don't have a state income tax though so that helps.

I believe the buyers premium goes to GL, and the rest to the GOV.

I could be wrong, but that is how I understood it.

If you go to your paylist in paypal, you can set it to go to your card.

My post was not ment as a flame on your spending habits.
SORRY if you took it that way.
Good Luck
Let me also say sorry if I came off as an ahole with my response. I knew I would have the money in my account to cover the auction shortly, but I would much rather put the cost on a credit card. When I do that not only do I earn points and cash back it also give me time that month to decide how and when I want to pay bills.

Paypal doesn't like for you to use credit cards because by federal law you have up to 60 days after billing to dispute a payment if the item isn't as stated to be or if there are certain other problems. If you pay from a bank account you have NO rights and paypal will simply ignore you and your problems.

PayPal does give you an option to choose which account to take money from but it defaults to bank accounts and you have to look closely to find the option to choose a credit card. Even after you choose credit card, PP will pop up a page wanting you to use a bank account and offering a $5 credit if you do. I use PP to pay for items on E-bay and I recentled bought some items and told PP to use my credit card but they used my bank account instead and overdrew my account and I had to pay over charge fees. After that I completely UN-linked my bank account from PP and ONLY use my credit card so they'll never do that to me again!
