Best Route Thru Ohio/Indiana

Looking for a little local advice for the best route- the trip is from Maryland to Utah. I came up with the two shortest routes and wonder which way you would go. Keep in mind I'm driving an empty M818.

Shortest route (by only a few miles) goes thru Cleveland then west thru Des Moines.

Other route rolls thru Columbus and Indianapolis. Let me know what you think- and of course fewer toll roads sounds good, but I'l' gladly pay tolls it if makes a better trip.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Mark, I always prefered the I-70 route when truckin. The exits aren't as spread out in the event ya need fuel or repairs.

I felt the roads were a little better too.

I 70 is great but west of Denver in an MV might be a bit of a bear, the Eisenhower is waaaaaaaay up there (. Wouldn't swinging through Wy. keep you at a lower altitude?

I would go I70 to Indy then I74 across illinois then catch 80 in just outside davenport Iowa.... just my 2cents

Good roads all the way with plenty of stops and a little shorter to I80.

St. Louis has some construction going.... In the St. Louis area there are two seasons: Winter and road construction. I would go up through the Quad Cities and across Iowa... Maybe a little cooler too. Forecast for this week in STL>>>>> HOT <<<<<

The transition from I-70 to I-74 in Indianpolis looks goofy, is it well marked? I'm thinking I will head up to Davenport and avoid St Louis.

I think it is marked pretty clearly, but I haven't been through there in a while. I would probably take the 465 bypass around the southern part of downtown. The you will run right into 74. I doubt you'll have any problems. If you do, it is only 100 miles to around the city and try again!!!! >>>>>LOL<<<<<< Good luck!!!

Depending on the time of day you come through here you could get help from me or my Brother or maybe even both of us out of Dayton.

I too would take I70-I68-I79-I70-Indy then the choice is yours. The easiest way to get onto I74 up to catch I80 is go straight through Indy on I70 and when you get to the airport exit turn right then get onto I465 North go a few miles and get on I74. I can't tell you how many times I have gone that way and got turned around before I figured it out. The route markings for it suck in Indy.

Or go to KC and up to 80..........

Dave if you are going to take 74 W out of Indy you will have to take 465 South from I-70 on the east side of town and follow it around to 74 West. The ramp on the west side of town from 70 to 465 North is closed and that would be your exit to get to 74 W. The south loop is only about 4 or 5 miles farther but a good route.
