Did i burn something up?

Well we just got back on a 80 mile excursion in our new duece. its a '87 m35a2c ldt465... my buddy was taking her home last night and the truck just died. flipped up the hood and he noticed the battery terminal was loose on one of the batteries. Apparently it had melted the top of the battery and ruined them, they were even new batteries only a month old lol. but anyways we get the new batts put in and notice as soon as we connect the last terminal on the 2nd batt. we see a poof of smoke from the alternator. well we try to crank it up and all the lights come on, gauge panel comes on, but the starter just clicks over. I think we may have fried the alternator. Anyone think this is the culprit?

Burned out voltage regulator in the alternator.

Melted terminals, and you avoided the worst(an explosion).

Well Im glad nothing exploded. but it did melt the terminals and the top/post of a battery. i assume the voltage reg, may be bad too, seeing as it was smoking a lil bit and sparked when he connected the batts, and when he tried to start it the alternator smoked some more... I wish i would have been there to describe what happend. would the burned up voltage regulator be the reason the starter clicks instead of turning over now? also can anyone point me to a parts supplier for these trucks? I really appreciate any help bros.

hello drgreg, no the batts are in there own compartment, sorry i made it seem like he flipped the hood and messed with the batts under the hood. when he changed the batts out and put the terminals to the batts he noticed smoke come from the alternator assembly. this was after he replaced the terminal connectors. he said he tried to start it up and it just clicked the starter, it would not turn over.

That is the voltage regulator for a generator.

It is more likely you have an alternato,r and the regulator for that is internal(the rear cover). It is not as easily available. CME rebuilds them.

The new starter and starter solenoid can be gotten from White Owl Parts, Eastern Surplus, Memphis Equipment, Boyce Equipment or the other usual suspects among our suppliers. It's really bad Ju-Ju to run a 24VDC military system without the batteries being firmly clamped into the circuit.

Ouch! Your wallets gonna scream on this one.....

ya my buddy is thinking about taking it to a big truck shop around here, i have a feeling they are going to rape his wallet! i dont think it will be too hard to fix, if we cant get it running after pull starting it with the new batts and batt terminals in, i think ima talk him into running to a local autozone to test the alternator first.

well i was finally able to get out an assess the damage today. upon first inspection i noticed my buddy scabbed on some car battery terminals and had melted one of the posts of the brand new optima batteries he just dropped in. upon closer inspection i noticed that he had attached the batteries backwards. the negative of one was connected to the positive side wires going to the alternator and starter. the wire going to the starter had a large notch in it and some "rough" looking frayed up stuff goin on about 12 inches up from the terminal. there was no wire exposed more like a "kink" in the wired with some damage around it. the dogbone looked in good condition but the positive wires were scabbed onto car terminals too... after jimmy rigging the terminals with good connections and in the proper order, i noticed smoke coming from the alternator. i assume this was from damage previously done by my friend. i noticed the volt gauge was at about middle yellow before trying to crank it over. upon cranking it i assessed that it did not have the juice to crank the truck over. so we pull started it and it immediately jumped to life. the truck was smoking this entire time up until when we pull started it. after about 100 yards of driving it the smoke cleared and stopped completely. we were able to drive it the full 10 miles without any problems and it ran like a top. the volt gauge was right at the yellow/green line.... i figured one of the batts were bad. once we got it to the lot, we shut it down. and let it sit for a bit. it would not fire back up, it did not have the juice, so now im sure one if not both new batts are bad.

where would you guys go from here? I told my buddy we need to do the following: 1. take old batts in for testing 2. pull alternator and test it 3. replace whatever doesnt check out 4. replace battery terminals and wires with new ones, maybe even the dogbone.

after this fiasco I plan on getting a "service kit" from easternsurplus with all new belts and filters, and changing out all the fluids (engine oil, tranny, axles) I also plan on servicing the axle seals and vents, maybe go so far as new bearings too. I told my buddy all the money he would be spending to have a shop rape him, he could be buying tools for us to be doing this work ourselves. Can anyone offer any advice/tips? It would be greatly appreciated, I am new to deuces but im in love with it already! We really need this thing up and dependable as it will be the workhorse for our new mobile powdercoating business.

okay so we got the new alternator hooked up... charged the new altima batteries on a trickle charger ( one at a time cause 12v charger) it started up and we ran it all over the place for about 2 hours. parked it and tested to make sure it would start back up. this morning we cranked it up and drove it around for about an hour doing various chores. parked it, then went back to start it and it seemed hard to start, like the juice was too low to kick it over fully. in the process of trying to start it everything went dead. all the lights and guages etc cut off.... we then did a visual inspection of tha batts and noticed that one of the batteries was extremely hot and was steaming out of a small filter/vent on the top of the altima... ill throw a voltmeter to it later... but seems like we cant get this thing going properly...
