antennae mount

Is it possible to securely mount an antennae bracket to the side of a M1008 or M1028 which does not already have the mounting holes in the fender? All I have seen appear to have some type of reinforcing nut built into the fender metal. I suppose I could use sheet metal screws, however this method of attachment would seem weak, as compared to the bolt-type on all the "factory" mounts.

Thanks in advance for comments.

I just went and looked at mine, I think Beanman has it right. either a plate or large washer to disperse the stress out over a larger area.

This has been covered several times. Some apparently are reinforced, some not. My M1009 is not and there is no issue. If you use all four points of attachment it will spread out the load and stress.
Recently someone had posted a copy of the installation instructions (shows reinforcement).
Here is the threaded insert (rivnut) used on mine.

I did several searches and could not find that thread. If anyone remembers where it is at, please post.

Thanks.

Harbor Freight sells a riv nut set pretty cheap that should get the job done, at some point I intend to r/r all the wonky ones on my M1009, I only have one out of three mount points that is remotely usable, the rest are damaged.

McMaster Carr has the 5/16" x 18 Nut Certs for about $6.00 for a package of ten (10) McMaster-Carr They offer them in aluminum or yellow zinc chromate plated steel. I would assume the steel is what I want? Also, they offer the 5/16" x 18 for two different material thicknesses, .027 - .150 and .150 - .312. Again, I would assume I need the latter, .150 - .312. They also have the installation tool McMaster-Carr , however I believe I can rig up a grade 8 bolt & nut to do the same thing at less cost.

Your continued comments will be appreciated.

OK, I got my Nut Certs ordered from Mcmaster Carr, now I need to know the exact location to mount the antennae bracket. I want to mount it in the forward position on the side of my M1028 on the driver's side. Is there a positioning template available?

Thanks for everybody's help.

I can measure my 1008a1 spots for you tomorrow. If I were you Id put the nutcerts on for all 4 spots. Every one Ive seen either had none or all 4.
Do you have the antenna bracket allready?

027 - .150 for no backing plate or one 1/8" or less and .150 - .312. for thicker backing plates.

I did not use backing plates when I added the rear mount.

The picture is from my M1009, the mounting holes were there when I bought it.

Basically the top of the antenna mount is flush with top of the bed and bottom holes are just below the body line. All vertical dimensions are within an 1/8" or so as I now have an antenna bracket installed.

Thanks Rich Johnson for the info. And thanks also to mistaken1 for the vertical position of the bracket (even with the top of the bed). Now if I can determine the correct horizontal position on the front of the bed, I'll be ready to drill & mount. Rich, I will indeed use the Nut Serts in all 4 holes. And to answer your question, I do have the bracket but do not yet have the shield piece. So if you know where one is available, please let me know.

Thanks again to everybody.
