I was over at my favorite forestry compound picking up a trailer and watching the guys load a couple of deuce on a low boy. He had to move a 5 ton tractor(multi-fuel) about a foot to access the last deuce maybe less than a foot, he picked it up by the front axle and rolled it forward, it started and just about pushed his forklift off the property before one of the guys shut it down! I don't park in gear anymore!

You shouldn't park in gear in the first place
That's one of the things I didn't know until I came to this site.

When I learned about it, I did an experiment. I parked on a steep hill, in gear, and dropped the brake to see if it would start. The engine was warm and it rolled less than a foot when it started up.

Now, I park out of gear, with the parking brake on, and the wheels chocked. It's the only safe way to park a multi-fuel.

READ THE TECH MANUAL! Seriously, it's in there!

The -10 TM is a simple to read operators manual. I just don't understand why people won't read it. (know it all or I wont read it because I was told to attitudes, kill people every day).

Obviously the forestry dept is not trained sufficiently! Please take a minute and contact the supervisor there and offer to share the TM information with them.

Always(when parked) leave your stop cable out and your transmission in neutral.

Doghead the supervisor was driving the forklift! These are good guys but high tech. they are not, when they punch a hole in a oil pan, moving the trucks around. they just flip the truck over on it's side to contain the oil flow!!!!

Last week the batteries went bad in my deuce. I had parked in in front of my shop and needed it moved. It was slightly down hill so my brother pushed it and got it rolling slowly. After it had rolled out of the way it was still barely moving. Just for fun a put the trans in reverse and popped the clutch. She fired right up. It really doesn't take much to roll start these trucks.

I took a piece of alumium about 1/8" thick. Cut a strip of it
so that the width was the length of the exposed stop shaft.
Bent it in a u shape so that it would slip over the exposed shaft
and keep the button from being pushed in.
drilled a hole thru the ends of the aluminum to fit a tiny padlock.
You could easily cut the padlock off with a bolt cutters,
but it keeps people from being stupid.

Non-Multi Fuel Trucks

Are the non-multi-fuel trucks just as easy to start? I know my M818 will burn through four batteries pretty quick, maybe I should just park on a hill!!!

If you are talking about the cummins engine, it takes a little cranking to get them fired up.
The 250 Cummins is an old school diesel.....if it has fuel and air to it and turns over once or twice it will fire....I have cranked them on a very sight incline by putting them in HIGH Range, 4th gear.

If you really want to get down to it, my November 1977 dated copy of TM 9-2320-211-10 (Operators Manual for Truck 5-Ton, 6X6, M39 Series) states that following on page 2-53 under "Stopping the truck and engine":

"c. After the truck had come to a complete stop, move the gearshift lever (3) into neutral position.

d. Set handbrake (4) and release clutch pedal (7) and brake pedal (6). Do not let truck coast backwards.

e. Allow a hot engine to cool off (idle 5 minutes prior to shutdown) to avoid serious damage.

CAUTION
THE DIESEL AND MULTIFUEL ENGINE SHUTOFF CONTROL KNOB MUST REMAIN IN THE STOP POSITION WHEN TRUCK IS NOT BEING OPERATED TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL STARTING OF ENGINE.

f. Pull out engine shutoff control knob on diesel and multifuel engines (antidiesel control on gasoline engines).

g. Place all switches on the OFF position.

h. PLACE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER (3) IN R (REVERSE) POSITION AFTER ENGINE HAS STOPPED IN CASE THE HANDBRAKE (4) DOES NOT HOLD."
