Atlanta people, M1009 jumpstart needed...

Hi all,

Is there anyone in the Atlanta area, that can help me get my truck running?

I just replaced the fuel filter, now I need a jump start.

If so, please email, pm, or call me..

I am at work now, it is 1:34pm.

What I would do is charge each battery independently. Even a cheap battery charger will give a more thorough charge that slaving it. Once both batts are charged you can go to town. You could also get it jumped from 2 normal vehicles. Just run jumper cables from one vehicle to one batt and another vehicle to the other batt. Presto, chargo.

You could take the batteries to a local Advance or Auto Zone and let them charge them. They do it for free.

Thank you for the tip. I will call my local advance (they are closer).
And ask when is the best time to bring them in.

How did you try to charge them? with a actual tickle charger or jumper cables to each one separately?

10 minutes is not much time especially if you were using a standard trickle charger (think hours not minutes).

Sorry your having trouble, if I was still stationed at FT Benning I would have drove up with a slave cable.

Thank you for the reply and the thought, I am glad to hear it.
I would return the favor too, if you ever needed help too.

Anyway, I tried charging it from the battery in my gf's car.
I do not have a charger.
I do not have 2 other 12v batteries (if I did, I would put them IN my truck)
I do not have 2 sets of jumper cables.

I thought 10 minutes on each battery would be long enough,
I guess I was wrong, my mistake.

It would be so much easier I think with another MV, a slave cable.
So that way it can be cranked while the fuel line is bled of any air,
and not drain down the batteries in the process..
Even a big rig that runs 24v in series would work..
But I have not found one of those yet either.

Don't take this the wrong way but, If you need a vehicle to give you a jump--you probably should not own a MV. They require maintenance and tools and are easy to fix if you have them but if not can get very expensive very fast.

if this is ur first military vehicle....ull be needing a lot of tools...unless u have the money to pay someone to come fix ur truck.....if u have AAA.....call them....and they will assist with a jump start......if u dont have AAA...id suggest u get it...........i use it often enough just for the free tows i get every year.....

I understand they require maintenance, so does any other vehicle.
I am not incapable or afraid of doing or learning how to maintain my vehicle.
I have plenty of tools, because I normally do the maintenance on my vehicles,
that I have learned and am capable of doing.

As far as getting it fixed when I cannot do it myself, not a problem,
I can and will pay repair bills when there is enough in my paycheck at the time.

Thank you for the email.

You are correct.

As I just said in another post, I have plenty of tools.
No problem, I have a few more at work too.

I had a 1965 classic car once, and after awhile, I knew almost every nut
and bolt in that car.
So most of the maintenance that it ever needed was done by me,
or by my best friend (a mechanic) and me.

So I am not afraid of learning or doing maintenance.

P.s. I plan on doing everything in my power to restore this M1009,
to as original military condition as possible, to make sure it lasts a long time,
and with plenty of respect, and too keep it that way.

I agree owning an MV requires maintenance and resources. Posting for help multiple times for a simple jump start concerns me that you may be over your head.

If I had to guess there is air in the fuel system again because of low fuel. I reccomend keeping the tank full as much as possible.

It will not happen again.

I do not think I am in over my head, but it is a simple jump start.
The problem is, military vehicles run 24v, so they cannot get a simple jump start
from a civilian vehicle.

Also, I do keep the fuel tank as fuel as possible, as often as possible.

What I am going to look into in the future, is to get a charger that can either
charge the batteries separately or together, so I will not have to post for
a jump start in the future.

Perhaps I should leave steel soldiers altogether, to avoid being a bother.
I did not mean to be such a bother, or appear I am in over my head.

Most likely very few CUCV owners have slave cables and I only have one because it was in a CUCV I bought. They are not that expensive, but something that really not a necessity as you have to have another MV w/NATO Slave to use it.

If you batteries are completely dead you will probably not even be able to slave start it. When I was first trying to start my M1009 that was sitting in a field for like 5 years the military batteries were dead completely. I tried to slave start it and it did not fire, or even turn over. So I installed just one battery in the front 12v side and then was able to slave start it.

All this time that you spent in this thread you could have charged each battery overnight and probably got your truck started if they are OK batteries. Also these trucks you can not just take to your local mechanic as they will have no idea what to do. These are 12v trucks with a 24v starting system only and most confuse these trucks for a 24v system and it is not. It is simply that people here just see what they feel is a simple question on something that can be searched for with a quick answers. Plus my guess is that others here are thinking that most people that work on cars have a low amp battery charger, it is a simple tool to own.

Before you jumped the back battery, did you disconnect it from the front battery first?
