Using a 5-ton to haul hay

I am thinking about buying a 5-ton 6x6 to haul 6ftx6ft round hay bales. The sales guy that I talked to says that it has a box on it. He has no info on it at all because they just got it in and the mechanics are going over it before they put it up for sale. I guess what I am wondering is what size boxes come on the various 5-tons. Would this make a good candidate to haul hay with? Any advice as to what to look for? Thanks for any help!

You have four choices. THe M813/923 with a 14x7' bed, and the M814/927 with a 20x7 bed. The 800 series have the deuce cab, 5 speed manual trannys, and single circuit air over hydo brakes. The 900 series have auto trannys, air brakes, and slightly larger cab.

Now THAT is what I'm talkin about! I dont think I would go that far becuase I have to pull some bigger hills, very cool! Pretty sure I am going to buy it after seeing this.

I have a setup like pctrans, But i was limited to 15 bales due to the size of the trailer, The performance of the truck just plain sucks on the highway, transported bales one time about 40 miles, wont do it again with the 18, but coming out of the field would be fine.

The beds are really not big enough to make it a good hay truck. However, before you buy it, make sure that it at least has a "drop side" box. If not, you won't be able to use it at all.

This looks like it works ok? It does not appear to have a "drop side" box. However I'm sure the drop side would work much better as you stated.

If your doing round bales it would not make a difference which truck you use, since the center of the bale is high enough for the spike to go it. Now if your doing square bale, then yeah get a drop side.

That would not be fun trying to offload all those bales by hand.

It looks like he must have put something in the bed to stack the bails on above the sides of the bed, and I guess if you were only going to haul them "one wide" it would be OK.
