M1031 w/crane

Has anyone installed one on their M1031? It would mean a hole in the roof and I'm thinking the floor would take some re-inforcement, but it would be the perfect maintenance rig. What are the dimensions of the shop body?

So nobody has put a little auto crane on one? Something to pull engines with? Might be too much work, but I thought it may have been done.

Problem would be the enclosed box would be next to usless. You'd be better off with something without an enclosed box, such as the Dodge M888 telephone maintenance truck. Or, how about a scratch built "bomb hoist" type rig built inside the M1031?

Found this photo somewhere in my internet travels, how about something like this:

You could fab up a reall heavy duty rear bumper and then get some trailer legs and mount them on both ends. Then mount crane on one end of the bumper. So when you lift something lower the trailer jack legs to that the weight is being held by them and not the frame and suspension of the truck. Also I would just the kind of jacks you see on the front of a medium sized gooseneck trailer. You can get a piece of pipe and connect the handle attachment points so you can just use one jack from the opposite side of the truck of the crane. Also it would make changing tires quick and easy. You would probably have to fab the bumper out of something like a 4" square tubing with a 1/4" wall. then weld the jack on either end. Then mount the crane to the top. You could theoretically pick something up and then swing it around into the bed and then disconnect the lifting hook after giving it a little slack. I drew a little picture just for illustration sake. I've wanted to get an M1031 and do this for a while. You could use the entire bed and still be able to lift heavy objects like engines. The only thing is I would go to crazy with the weight if you are lifting from the side. Reason being is that you could torque something with a whole lot of weight. But I think having one on a maintenance truck is viable if we are talking about lifting off heavy tires, maybe axles, possibly and engine or tranny.

Now I just need to convince the wife that I need to buy an M1031!!!
