Tow bar, Slave cables, special tools, etc...

Hi all,

In the hopefully near future, when business where I work picks up and,
I can afford it.

I would like to buy a tow bar & a set of slave cables, but not right now.

How much would it be for a M1009 suitable tow bar, and a slave cable,
in good, safe condition?

So that way, in the future, if any of you need help with a tow or a jump,
I could possibly assist you, and be glad to do it.

Also I know it would not be a bad idea either.
A charger suitable for charging batteries, jump starting, a typical 24 volt military system.
How much for one of those too?

By the way, are there any other specific tools I would need to get,
to maintain my M1009, I have many tools, (I used to be a backyard
mechanic on my own vehicles).
But is there any specialized tools just for the M1009, I would need?

Any answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated.
I want to be just as helpful to you guys, as you have been with me.

Thank you, have a good day,

CJ

Some special tools would be any other tool you would use on anyother vehicle, such as pully puller, harmonic balencer puller. but most of the stuff can be rented from a local parts store such as O'rielly auto parts, autozone, and they are FREE to rent.

The slave cables can be bought on ebay for around $100 but are very rare.

Hello,

Thanks for the email and information.

I am 336 miles away from Newberry, Fl.

How much do you want for the tow bar?
How much do you want for the slave cables?

Thank you,

Hello Blazer,

Thank you for the email and information.
If I need a tool and do not have it, I will either buy it or rent it.

I have checked ebay for slave cables, you are right, I saw some there for about $100.00.

When I have money to spend again, I will buy a tow bar, slave cables, more tools as I need them.
Because I want to get my M1009 in tip top shape, and keep it that way.
So that way, anyone will be proud to own it, ride in it, look at it, etc.

Have a good night,

CJ

I looked around for a while til I found a tow bar for under $300 that was semi close to me. My advice on the slave cable - buy the ends and make your own from welding cable.

I keep hearing this sugestion "make your own", but ends are $35 each, plus single prong to 2 prong adapters are $30 and then I called a local welding shop and 50' of 2/0 cable is $181! That would put my 25' slave cable at near $300.

Maybe I'm missing something and someone could explain to me a better way.

For a 1009 owner, I would recommend saving the cash from buying a military tow bar and getting a civy one. They can be had for under $100. When you get/build a salve cable 25 is the minimum length I'd go for.

The only issue I see with these are you need a second MV to use them.

We have several folks in the ATL area with these items just not always with the time to come during the week.

As for the slave cables, I still think buying the original is about even with making your own using used welding cable. I personally would just buy an original set. Even with that said, unless you have a second vehicle nearby that can slave you off, they're no good. I posted last fall about going to WR and having the batteries die on me in a McD parking lot. Ended up getting started by having another large truck tow start me.

The towbar is not really needed unless you plan on getting a deuce. Reason is, we saw the issue of towing a 1009 with a 1009. It ain't the most exciting thing I've done but the pucker factor during some stopping situations makes life interesting. I use mine probably more than the average person on here and so far this year have used it 4 times and loaned it out once and about to use it another time next month. So they just aren't used that much.

You're going through a tough spell with your truck. Once it gets going, you most likely will be able to keep it going.

I'm the opposite, my summer months are pure HE!!. In addition to this, we are about to embark on a huge project at work that is/will significantly affect my time off. I appologize for not being able to get back up sooner to provide a slave start.

Hang in there. There are a lot of really good folks in the ATL area that can help.

There's at least half a dozen tow bars within 50 miles of ATL. Why waste 400$?

Hello Carnac,

Thank you for the reply and information.

Yes, I am going through a little rough spot with my truck, but despite what others implied, I do not feel I am in over my head.

As for the slave cables, I would like to do what you would, and that is to buy an original set, so I can offer my help to others that may need a jump start,
and in case I ever need one from another military vehicle.

Same goes for the tow bar, just in case I need one, it would be good to have one.

I just need to know where to find those items, and how much would be fair prices for both of them.

Also, do not worry about not being able to come up sooner,
I understand everyone has things to do.
And I do not expect anyone to drop everything and come running to help me at the drop of a hat.
But if it would be no trouble, and/or someone had the time,
any help would of been greatly appreciated.

I have to go, got to leave for work for the day.

Have a good day, Thank you,

CJ

One thing I would add to your collection would be a decent but not outrageous battery charger. A decent battery charger can do a better job than a jump and charging each battery alone works better.

Recovry,

Very well, I will add that to my list of items to get in the future.
How much would a decent charger cost me bran new or used?
What brand names should I look for?
Anything else in a charger I need to look for?

Any information would be appreciated.

If I properly equip myself, I can be just as helpful to all of you,
as you have been to be so far, and then some.
Which I would be glad to do, since helping people is the right thing to do.

Have a good night,

CJ

I have a Schumacher hand held one. It has a 75A boost, 12A and 2A charge. Don't remember what I paid for it but its a blessing around here. Don't know how I ever survived without it

Schumacher yes...

I splurged. It was my second one. The first one lasted twenty years.

So I got the Schumacher SE3000 - Best money I've EVER spent. If you have ANY vehicles that are 24v, this IS the only way to go. I love mine.

Schumacher Wheeled Starter/Charger — 200/80/60/44/30 Amp, Manual, Model# SE-3000 | Battery Chargers | Northern Tool + Equipment

Please note the 24v/200 amp engine start...

CJ, I'm with you. I'm hoping to pick a tow bar up this month. It works GREAT with my M1028A2 dually for sure. Pulling an M1009 is eazy, peazy...

And yeah, gotta have a slave cable. But I've got three CUCV's right now. So it's a worthwhile investment for me.

One thing you haven't said is: do you need the single pin NATO cable or the older 2 pin slave cable? The 2 pin is alot cheaper.[thumbzup]

Hello hndrsonj,

Thank you for the message.

It looks like I need the single pin NATO cable (I just looked at it..)

I was not aware until now, there was 2 different types.

Have a good night,

CJ
