M1009 Battery size/make/model

Hi everyone,

I have an M1009.

I may need two new batteries.

The replacement batteries I have now may need to be replaced.

I just do not remember the model # of the ol original batteries.

The original batteries it had in it when I got it were...
"Workaholic" by interstate battery.

What is the proper make, & model # battery for an M1009?
With the typical 6.2L Diesel V-8 engine.

Also, anyone know where I can get a pair of batteries suitable for an M1009,
either very cheap or free?
Due to the economy, I am flat busted broke right now.

When I got the replacement batteries, from interstate.

A pair of brand new "workaholic"'s for that M1009 would of been about $230.00 for the pair at Interstate in Kennesaw.
I just did not have that much at that time, so I got a pair of used
batteries.

Not trying to be a jerk, just want to be sure you know about both.


The original military batteries would have been 6TL. The military may have replaced them with group 24 or 31 batteries.

There are dozens of threads on battery replacement. As for the CUCV threads, it might do you alot of good, to take a few hours and read the CUCV forum threads, all of them, seriously. There is so much good info to read and when your done reading it all, you will really be impressed.

Same thing with the TMs. copy and save them on your computer, read them once, from front to back.


Knowledge/information, is a powerful thing....

That is the battery size I thought it was, I just could not remember.

I have tried to read the tech manuals, and I still do when I get a chance.
They are just a bit diificult to read some times.

I also spend much time reading most of the other threads here,
and I have learned alot, they are great to read.

Try to find Interstate reconditioned (refurbished) batteries. They don't look pretty, but they are cheap. Through a local Interstate battery store (the guys that supply my whole area) I found only two. I paid $45 per battery and they offered either $10 or $5 back for the old ones. I haven't heard of anyone having any trouble with these. It's a great deal, IMHO.

If your original batteries didn't last long, you may consider some sort of trickle charge arrangement. If you leave your truck for any period of time without running it, then I'd suggest that. It will greatly improve the longevity of your batteries. It's pretty important to start that process on new batteries, not old. If your truck is a DD, I wouldn't worry about it.

Those are what I have in my M1009 and was like $104 with tax for two reconditioned batteries and work great.

Call local Alternator repair shops, those are the guys that will probably know where to get them or have them themselves.

Even though the battery trays are designed to hold a 6TL and the military used them for a while, I would caution against them. Group 31s fit the trays as do Optimas with an adapter. Group 31s can be had in various CCA. The problem with the 6TL is weight, they do tend to crack the sheet metal on the inner fender. Do yourself a favor and avoid the 6TL for your CUCV. The fording vent on a 6TL is just not necessary on the CUCV.

i have 2 napa commercial batteries in my m1009 now they fit the trays with no adaptor and the have screw on top posts the batteries i believe are group 31 i think but they are found in every 18 wheeler on the road

I will ask them thank you. I was disconnecting the batteries so I could finish the doghead mod (tuck it away make it look nice) and it failed to start up. glow plugs made an awful noise and ever since it wont start. I had advance charge them over night so i will pick them up tomorrow (computer read replace) One of the posts on gen 2 is damaged and I have no idea how old the batteries are. So I hope Its just the batteries and possibly the batt posts. Also when the battery had more power the noise did go away

New interstates do cost that much.

Sometimes Interstate has "refurbished" Group 31 batteries in stock for under $50. You have to ask for them.

One of the first things that is talked about in the technical manuals is that before starting any electrical work is to make sure you batteries are fully charged and load tested. You have found out why. Batteries can die in a blink of an eye and without knowing the condition of the batteries, you will be chasing your tail trying to figure out what is the problem. I have seen new off the shelf batteries go dead.

Two tools that I recommend any MV owner have is a multimeter and a battery load tester. Both can be had from Harbor Freight (yes I hate to buy China stuff) for under $40.

They should as the group 31 is probably the largest of the automotive type battery.
I have 2 CarQuest group 31's in my 1009, fit like they should with no mods to the battery tray or holders, mine are post type, if your are wondering.

Now if someone swapped out the battery tray for a civi type, then the group 31's may have some trouble fitting, if they are of the smaller type. Just do yourself a favor to be safe and measure the width and length of the battery tray and do the same with the group 31 battery, just to make sure. My trays are easily 4 inches longer in length and about maybe 2 inches wider then the battery itself. I did not measure, just going off my memory from when I changed them out.

Tractor Supply carries Exide Group 31 batteries. They do a great job. If you can get the Interstate blems, that's a hard deal to beat. But really, any Group 31 will fit.

Glow plugs don't make noise, but the glow plug relay can chatter up a storm. Low voltage is one reason for that. All electrical troubleshooting should START with fully charged, good batteries. If you don't, you can spend days chasing ghosts.
