Hello gentlemen, I am wanting to do some touch up on the engine. I ordered what I thought was the correct paint from RAPCO but it's too Khaki (24087). Any ideas? The LS-454 is exactly what I am looking for as far as color. The engine pick really doesn't show the color too well with all the dust etc. The little color tiles on Rapco's webstite is just that...too small to tell. At least on the little laptop I'm using. Please advise.

khaki is not 24087, Olive drab semi gloss is. fyi, khaki is a tan . to be honest to get a match from anybody will not work all flat and semi paints fade more than gloss paints, and as for a correct match it is written that arvoe is the closest match to original 24087 and darkens to that dark jungle look like U will see in documentarys, 609 953 1003 is Al the paint mans number in NJ, great guy easy to deal with, fyi, that is alot more than an opinion on the match also in time the arvoe will match really nice .but like everything else in this world there are people who like different things and different suppliers, ...Randy good luck...

24087 from Rapco is OD green. However once I started spraying I noticed the paint had a more pronounced khaki tint to it compared to what the engine was painted. The original engine color is the same as the LS-454 speaker I listed above

Ok, here's a pic of what I ended up with using 24087. The color I was after is on the air intank pipe connected to the turbo (sorry not sure what the proper name is). I figured the paint would have dried to the correct color...boy was I wrong.

Could it be a variety of forest green?

One of the articles on camo paint schemes mentions that there was a period of time during which the deuce would have come from the factory with a base coat of forest green. The additional camo colors were then added once the truck arrived at it's intended destination. Just a thought.

Does this help?

Beware - don't confuse colors with numbers. Today's Federal Standard is FS595B (it was adopted in 1989) - and there is a color 24087 listed in it. However, this is NOT the same COLOR as the Vietnam era 24087.

Before FS595 there was TT-C-595, which had numbers wtih 4 digits rather than five.

FS595 was adopted in 1956 and was the standard until 1968. Addendum 2 to FS-595 was made on May 9, 1960. With it colors 14087, 24087, and 34087 (Olive Drab) were replaced with X-14087, X-24087 and X-34087.

The applicable Federal Standard during much of the Vietnam war was FS595A (adopted in 1968).

Chg 3 to FS-595A was made on April 28, 1972 Colors 14050-X, 14087-X, 24087-X and 34087-X were introduced permanently to the standard and thus dropped the suffix "X".

Chg 6 to FS-595A February 1, 1980 issued a self-adhesive chip for 34087 to cover the "incorrect" shade included in the 1979 reprint of documentation.

Chg 7 was made to FS-595A, on January 1, 1984 was made. Colors 14087 and 24087 renamed to 14084 and 24084, 34087 renamed to 34088.

Chg 8 to FS595A was made August 30, 1984. In this revision Chg 6 was cancelled to prevent continued use of color designation 34087.

On December 15, 1989 the Federal Standard was revised, and became FS595B.

As can be seen here, the COLOR of FS595A 24087 pre 1984 is the same as FS595B 24084; FS595B 24087 is not the same COLOR as FS595A 24087.

Its no wonder so many folks complain that the paint they bought doesn't match their NOS parts.

David Doyle

Should be 34094 Woodland Green. That is the "383" CARC substitute.
I've used the Gillespie in gallons and Averoe spray cans. They both conform the the Federal specs and so far they've matched each other.

It does look like the color of 383 CARC to me also. Did the engine/engine compartments receive the actual CARC? Mine needs to be cleaned up and painted also, as it is cracking and chipping. I also would like to know your tricks on getting it ready for paint, as it looks really clean. I have about 2.5 gallons of semi gloss Olive Drab, (the original paint from the 50's and 60's) that I used to paint the inside of bed and cab floors. It turned out pretty good, and has a small sheen that should clean up better than the flat color. I am thinking about doing the engine with it, just to add a little shine under the hood.

The truck has the original engine (1200 miles/102 hours). The engine bay never recv'd CARC. The only thing CARC'd in there is the air cleaner housing and the heater unit. I have noticed all my '80's deuces ALL have the original engines that came with the truck (Hercules). All the engines are the exact same glossy OD green. I prepped the engine by scrapping the rust, painting bare metal with "RUSTY METAL" paint from a rattle can. On the painted surfaces I just roughed it up with sandpaper.

Here is what the engine looks like original from Hercules. This is what I am trying to duplicate. This is a pic out of my 1988 M35A2c. I know the Army did CARC their rebuilds and such.
