I am relatively new to the MV scene, and as new as they come to this site :). I have found some great info on here, and I am sure I will be on here alot in the future. I am looking to buy a M35A2, as I have wanted one since I was young. I looked at one today, and found something I am not sure of on the tag on the engine block. I was looking for it to end with a 1C or 1D to kow what type of turbo it may have. Instead it had a 1A. Now I can't remember if it was a LDS or LDT, but I'm sure it read 465. The turbo on it looked like a whistler, from what I have read. Can anyone tell me anything about what this engine really is? What horsepower ect., and if it is as reliable as the other multifuels? The truck I looked at is a winch truck, not a drop side bed, has hard top, heater, cargo cover/bows ect, and is not in bad shape over all and has forms to get title. Shows 26k on odometer, needs tires and one of the winshields. What would be a good price for me to jump at this one?

The engine tag has nothing to do with which turbo it has on it. The engine tag designates the engine model, not the turbo model.

All the brands of engine are the same.

HP should be listed on the engine data tag. (134 hp)

Welcome to the site.:D Lots of factors to consider in determining a fair price for the truck. Most private party winch trucks to go for 3500 to 4500 from what I've seen. That is unless it is in exceptionally good shape. One of my trucks has a 1c designation when it is actually a D turbo. Post some pics.

the turbo has a band holding it together and not bolted together. The batteries were out of it, so no hearing it run today. He assures me it runs well, and if I go back for another look he said he will start it up. I didn't take any pictures of it. So, the 1A really doesn't mean anything then? I just wanted to make sure I wasn't getting an odd ball that wouldn't interchange with the most common parts.

If it has a lds it is about 50 more hp and a lot more fun to drive.
:ditto:
...... and no matter what model turbo it has!

To my knowledge only the LDS465 Multifuel engine takes the "-1A" so most probably it is one! Originally that motor was equipped to fit the 5ton but they have put many of them into Deuces as well. It really makes a difference, well worth 1K over the average price for a std M35A2, IMO.

That makes his deal sound better, but I don't know if my budget can handle the price tag. I made an offer, so I will have to see what happens I guess. I started my search looking for a real cheap work horse, and now I'm leaning more toward a nice one to restore :)

All the more reason to buy a second truck! You'll see, you can't stop at just one MV....

Just thought I would update here. I did buy this truck, and so far I am very happy with my purchase. It runs and drives great, does have the whistler, and after looking at a bunch of other equally priced trucks I see I got a very fair deal. Here is a picture of when I picked it up.

And now after the new paint work.

So what did it have for a motor LDT or LDS
LDS-465-1A  I haven't had it on the road much, waiting to get title, tags, and ins. But from the ocassional trips a couple miles down the back roads, it runs nice! Nice loud whistle and plenty of black smoke when I put the hammer down. Gets up to 50mph pretty quick for a 13k lb truck.
