Hi all,

Does anyone in the Atlanta, Ga area happen to have a:

Fuel gauge for a 1985 M1009 Chevy CUCV Blazer.

If you do, please let me know the price.

Mine is not working, but I would like it to be.

Thank you,

CJ

CycleJay, are you sure it is the gauge and not the fuel sending unit? Check your grounds and the single pink wire running to the fuel tank there is a black connection on it, also check the TM for proper troubleshooting the electrical system. LMC has the fuel gauge and you can get the fuel sending unit from autozone. Hope this helps.

Hello Blitz,

Thank you for the message.
Somehere fairly knowledgeable on here told me awhile back, the fuel gauge may have corrosion, and may need to be cleaned.

And since I have been concentrating on getting it running, I was not thinking about
the fuel gauge.

Now that it is running, I can focus on other things, and thought it would be better to
just replace the fuel gauge.

Right now the gauge works intermittenly, not all the time.
What do you think?

But I will follow your advice too, and see what happens.

Thank you, have a good day,

CJ

Hi all, & Blitz,

I read the TM for the M1009, and it said to disconnect the sending unit ground from frame,
turn key to run and see what happens.

I did that, and the gauge still read empty, and the TM says that means I need to replace the fuel gauge.

Anyone know where I can find one that works? And the price?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Have a good day,

CJ

Jay,

LMC truck is on line and is a great source for the chevy stuff. They have about the cheapest prices you will find from a commercial vendor.

Did you pull the old one and clean the contacts both on the guage and in the dash?

The intermitten working leads me to think it is the contacts or a bad ground.

Hello Carnac,

Thank you for the message and information.

I will take apart the dash next, and try to find out what is wrong.
In the mean time, I will look into LMC online for a fuel gauge.

Unless someone pops up and says they have one.

Thank you, Have a good night,

CJ

Hello Everyone,

I feel like trying to solve my fuel gauge problem either today (Sunday) or next Saturday.

I have read the TM's, and saw how involved it is.

Now I would like to know, just to get it apart, to clean the fuel gauge contacts, or replace it.

Approximately how long would it take from start to finish to get this done?
(taking apart the dash, cleaning the gauge with dielectic grease, putting it all back together and restarting the blazer)
Just so I know if I even have the time today, considering the other things I have to do today.

Also, is dielectic grease the best thing to clean the contacts on the backside of gauges?
And if so, where do I find it?

I am enjoying reading the TM's, learning this blazer, and doing what I can to repair it myself.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you...

Have a good day,

CJ

Took me a Saturday afternoon to do mine. Any parts store should have the grease. Mine ended up being a broke wire near the tank. Still worth the effort to clean the contacts and replace burnt out bulbs.

Brad,

Thank you for the information.

That is exactly what I wanted to know, because even if I worked carefully but quickly.
I did not want to be halfway thru it and it be too late to finish, especially since I need this vehicle
running, so I can go to work tomorrow.

By the way, if you replace burnt out bulbs, can you find those at any normal auto parts store too?
Or do you have to special order them from someplace, since the M1009 runs on 24 volts?

Have a good day,

CJ

Yep just take your time and work methodically and only pull one bulb at a time and look at the numbers so you don’t get them mixed up. I even did this when cleaning the circuit film. If you haven’t seen it yet read this great write up by 1stSarg

CUCV Instrument Cluster Cleanup

There are some good links in his signature that should help you with this.

You’d be surprised what a little cleaning will do. Other than one resistor i need to replace my das is as good as new after a taking the few hours to clean it up. BTW keep the cleaners away from the white rings on the red light filter for the GEN's. It smears easily.
