M1009 Roadtrip question

Hi guys,

What is the best way for me to find out if my M1009,
will be able to make a long road trip in excess of 2-3 hours, and/or 200-300 miles?

It starts, runs and drives great so far, locally.

But I have yet taken it on a real road trip of any excess length.

Any ideas??

I know the fluids are all topped off, I know of no major problems with it, etc.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you have been driving it around without issue, it has no leaks, check the belts and hoses and go for it. I drove one of mine 450 miles home and the other about 1100 miles home. I run around 65 normally and get around 20-22 mpg on the road. Out of all the military vehicles I have been around, the M1009 runs down the highway faster and cheaper than anything else. Glen

There shouldn't be any problems if it drives ok for small trips. I have used mine as a daily driver to work for weeks at a time (85 miles roundtrip) and also taken it on a six hour, 375 mile trip from Moab, Ut to Denver, Co over the Rocky Mountains with no reliability issues.

I have had no problems on short trips, but before I venture out too far I want to replace the ujoints. The rears had some rust on them last time I had the tranny out, greased them up, no vibration but just would not trust them on a 2-3 hr trip.

city or local driving is harder on a car/truck than highway what I mean is if you have had no problems driving localy you should be fine on a trip like stated check fluids /belts/hoses tire presure and you should be fine.

Ditto to what everybody else has said. Mine is about 6 weeks removed from the the military, and I have been driving it daily. I have gone on a 300 mile round trip and several 180 mile round trips to Atlanta, and I've had no problems whatsoever.

Batteries would be a concern if they are the original military ones. Belts and hoses need to be inspected and replaced if any sign of wear. Fuel filter would be another thing to change on the top of my list as well as engine oil and filter. Tires in good shape? Brakes work good? No oil leaks or leaky hubs ect ect? If you changed everything else then I say a long road trip would be fine. But there is always a chance of something breaking. It happens even on new vehicles. I wouldnt worry about it if youve done pretty much what everyone has suggested to do.

That's the best way to make sure to get there and back if you have a problem.
I've read several posts about roadwarriors that set out and get slowed by a problem until they contact a nearby SS member
Good Luck. IF you wander near Houston you will have several SS members in the weeds watching out for ya...
