To fix a leaky gasket on the engine, the cab must be lifted off the truck. It took about six hours to disconnect everything, including winch controls, electrical, air and fuel lines and linkages plus the extras added by yours truly.
Not sure how I would have done it without the HIAB, but the lift itself took a good hour.
I'll be fixing the little hidden and hard-to-get to things over the next few days, things that have accumulated since the last time the cab came off almost exactly 3 years ago...

More images.
The boom was extended 20 Ft for the lift and I'd guesstimate the weight of the cab to be about 2,500 lb by the "feel" of it (the way the engine was loaded down), which is max for that reach.

what gasket was leaking? its nice having all the tools for the job...i've been putting off changing my compressor gasket since i got the truck. seeing you do that makes my gasket look like a walk in the park! Good job though, it sure is a good feeling after you get a continous problem like a leaky gasket fixed

Right, the gasket leak has bugged me for some time. It's the oil canister bracket-to-block gasket. No way to work on it with the cab mounted.
I also want to check the IP again, a couple of times the fuel supply has been limited as if the stop block got hung up or something. Fuel rod or FDC problem? Last drive kept the engine RPM to no more than 1,200, which limited the speed to a crawl, but I did make it home fortunately. Yes the fuel filters were replaced. Flooring it in neutral produces no more than 1,400 RPM and it appears a fixed limit. The "gas" pedal linkage to the IP has full range of movement.
Anyway, we'll see what's up.

I don't have to tell you this B, but now is the time to really detail the front end of the truck-paint the underside of the cab, paint the frame, engine compartment, etc.

You need to throw some bearings in the super deuce and brew up some bio and come visit us again!

Getting it ready for the GA Rally Bjorn?
If Clinto can manage to keep his rally going a few more years, I'll be there, but not in 2010. Since retiring a couple of years ago, money has been in short supply and it seem like everything is getting more expensive.
Got lots of little projects to juggle, want to make it possible to power the HIAB from an outside source, possibly the 8x8, so that it can be used to lift the engine (from you Kenny) in and out of the deuce, among other things.

Appreciate the invitation Clinto.

I hear you on money. Going to be tough this year, tougher next year if I can even make it. Was hoping to get some interest on some junk I'm selling to offset the cost, didn't happen. This might just be my last year making the 700 mile pilgrimage.

Proceeded with the preparations for replacing the failed gasket on the oil filter bracket today. Whoever worked on it before left part of the old gasket in, which may have caused the leak.
BTW, the bracket for the -2 engine is made of aluminum and weighs only 15 lb while the other multifuel engines have the steel one, weighing 39 lb. Part of the effort to lessen the vehicle weight of this series trucks.

Received the O-rings (theoringstore.com) and finished reassembling the oil cooler.
Images show progress. Got the cab lifted back on yesterday just before a light rain shower.

Earlier in this thread I mentioned that there was a problem with the FDC or fuel rod possibly sticking, well I found out that there may have been the electrical shut-off solenoid housing that jammed the fuel rod. I replaced the solenoid with a different one that I had on hand, which has more clearance within. May have been an MWO on this some time in the past...

There will be another day before all reconnections are done in this service procedure. I can guess why this vehicle wasn't more widely accepted by the army, at least not from an "ease of maintenance" point of view.
