to introduce myself im with a volunteer fire department we have very little money and out M-817 dump truck w/w (converted to a tanker pumper winch removed and pump added and dump bed and hydraulics removed 2000gallon tank added) were having problems with the brakes. i know they are "air over hydraulic" even though they are really air assisted thats a different topic. i guess my question is what is a common brake problem with the M817? we added brake fluid and pumped it up and nothing. any help would be greatly appreciated. ill try to add pics later.

EDIT: well i made a mistake our m-817 is the blown up 6x6 we got the one with no brakes is a m51a1 with the same addons as the m817

What type of fluid did you use? Dot3 or Dot5? How long have you had the truck?

The Tech Manuals have a troubleshooting section that may very well answer your question.

You will need to bleed the airpack first and the bleed the wheel cyliders. All covered in the Tech Manuals.

You can find them using the Resources Button at the top of the page.

You wiil need all of the TM 9-2320-260-xx series manuals. I have 8 of them that I have downloaded. They are on page 8.

Steel Soldiers :: Military Vehicles Supersite

Also download the Lube Order

Set up a directory for Manuals, then subfolders for each type of truck, ie CUCV, M818, M35, etc. and then when you find a manual, download it to the proper folder.

You will need to read Section 8-15 of the TM 9-2320-260-20 manual. It covers bleeding of the system.

They use a preassure pot to bleed the system. As most of use do not have access to one or the funds to buy one, we make our own. Here is an example of one we make with a bug sprayer and a few parts. Costs less than $25.

I have worked on both the 800 series 5tons and CUCVs. If you have any questions, please let me know.
