ok boys and gilrls . here is the question ? i have two cucvs one 85 m1010 the other is 86 m1028a1 with service body on it . both run great no issures at all . both will start up and run . my 1010 is a d/d runs great pulls hills good never backs down from work or heavy load . the 1028 have not put on road yet just have had alot of time to fix few very mirror thing befor bring it in road coulpe body rust holes . so here is question start both trucks let run warm up in drive way say 45mins. just for conversaytion. side by side my 1010 idles fair amont higher than 1028 and is quite abit louder . both trucks side by side really cant here the 1028 . my 1010 i have had for 4 years never had issues at all only a very little puff of white smoke on start up . doesnt burn oil at all 3-4000 between oil change . never give the niose any thought just always said it was normal but just said old 6.2 noisey old mil. truck in fact love it . now the kick down does work makes big diff. when it is off so that does work . so what would the diff be both stock 6.2 oly a year apart . just wondering why so diff but both or smooth could put coofe cup on breather not spill any . any thoughts.

just on how the timing is set. From the factory they take a blank pump and block, set the timing and then they mark the block and pump with the line. Now if the pump is changed, the timing mark realigned the timing will NOT be the same. The timing has to be set with the timing box (tool to do it). 99.999999% of pump changes get the slap it in and line up the marks and go. I am dealing with the same issue right now in a 1992 1 ton. so all in all the timing needs to be checked and adjusted.

I have three now, two M1009s and a M1008 and had a fourth one, a M1008. The original M1008 had a substantial knock and normally ran right at 18 mpg. The M1009 in this video has a more pronounced knock than the other two I own and it usually runs around 20 mpg combination driving. My other M1009, the quiet one, runs around 18 mpg and will get 22 on the highway, at least coming home from Salt Lake City it did. The newer M1008 will get around 17mpg on the road and around 9 mpg with my son driving it. When I drive it I seem to get around 15.

At any rate, the M1009 in this video has the best power and gets the best mileage of my three. I suspect the pump timing is advanced. None of them used any oil to speak of and all four start/started really easily. Glen

this is true the marks are just for static timing. most of the time it is dead on. some times when rebuilding the IP you can only get the internals with in 3 degrees of the timing mark on the pump

Personally, I would like all of mine set like the original M1008 was and I would gladly take the extra noise. That was an awesome truck that ran cheap and had great power! I doubt my neighbors cared for the early wake up calls though. My current M1008 could almost pass for a gasser.... Glen

My M1009 when I 1st got it was covered in sound proofing and the timing mark was retarded approx 1/8". It was quieter than a gas engine of that vintage. Mileage and power were down, but not huge. I have since removed the sound deadening material and reset the timing to the mark. It now makes more noise, but also gets 2-3 more mpg and has better power. I believe the timing on my truck was retarded to make it as quiet as possible. It had a the remains of a stereo in it and I believe that was the prime consideration. It still is quieter than every other CUCV I'v heard.

I just got done turning up the fuel delivery screw in my M1028 today and noticed that not only was it peppier but yep it is also louder and idles a little bit higher. Im guessing someone adjusted the injection pump on your M1010 to increase the output of the motor a little bit. Probly to make up for the added weight of the ambulance body and also the power drain of running with the ac turned on.
