M1008 6.2L vs HUMVEE 6.2L... OIL DIP STICK ASSEMBLY interchangable?

Searched, and this OBSCURE problem has not been previously posted. Simple question; Since I can't put both of them in front of me to compare, can anyone tell me if the Engine Oil DIPSTICK/TUBE ASSEMBLY on the later 6.2L HUMVEE oil pan---- IS DIFFERENT--- than the ones on the early 6.2L M1008 oil pan?

To be clear---- the oil pans are different--- we already know this. I am asking about the engine oil DIPSTICK/TUBE ASSEMBLY that locates to the DRIVER-SIDE of oil pan---does anybody know--- for sure--- if these are interchangeable parts?

To the best of my knowledge and by overwhelming consensus of GM dealers and ALL salvage-yard PARTS-NAZI's, there are NO replacement dipstick assemblies for 1982-87 CUCV engines available on this planet, be it new, used or otherwise, now and forever, until the end of all time. This happens to be the only part that's missing on my recently acquired truck and the civilian parts-denial types could care less.

Accordingly, 6.2L HUMVEE oil-dipstick assemblies are plentiful; used, NOS, and/or so numerous in quantity that they are being tripped over and otherwise discarded like toiletry.

To explain, (in case anyone's really interested) my recently acquired M1008 came equipped with everything it needed to make a whole, start-able/drive-able truck... EXCEPT--- the engine oil dipstick assembly.

Now I could do a hillbilly-improv to get me by and get this thing running and forget the world because I was born in Illinois and don't care what most people think. But you would think (as I did) that a few calls to local GM dealers, salvage yards, eBay, etc., one would have turned up something after 8 to 10 days of searching. Well, so far one has not. Because as I've called and talked to parts-people about 6.2L, '85/86 engine/vehicle apps, parts availability, etc., when I get to the point of finally asking for an engine oil dipstick assembly and without even a Milli-second of thought, these 'professional auto-parts-deniers who actually hate anyone who needs help will reply; "we don't have anything like that here"... OR; "we don't strip our engines down like that..." OR; "we ONLY sell engine cores, not valve covers or brackets."

I wasn't asking for valve covers or brackets... and so it comes to this?:cookoo:

The Humvee dipstick tube is different as well as the dipsitck itself, but that dosen't mean that you can't carefully bend the tube and trim off the top portion to make it work for your application.

I just noticed that you are in Victorville. You can check with Walker Auto and Truck Parts in Hesperia. If Dave dosen't have a new tube, he'll have one on a take out engine.

Thanks again Dilvoy. But I'm REALLY looking for an original factory setup here. Because another thing I'm noticing is that there's VERY little room between the frame and the exhaust manifold where the tube would come out of the oil pan... like maybe a half-inch. This makes me skeptical about using the so-called UNIVERSAL DIPSTICKS some of the speed shops offer.

So whatever I rig-up to work temporarily could VERY likely be coming in contact with the hot manifold and depending on how much the motor flexes on it's mounts, contact could be made very frequently.

I'm also concerned that I may only discover fitting problems with a temp-dipstick, ala MURPHY'S WAY, as I'm riding down the road some fine day and suddenly I notice the oil light come on and look back to see the trail left behind from my suddenly shortened or missing hillbilly-dipstick.

Question if anyone can answer; while the engine is under load, does the crankcase develop a LOT of pressure? In other words, can I just plug the oil pan for now until a better solution comes along?




Meanwhile, I'm reminded of an old tune...(... where have all the dipsticks gone, long time passing... where did all the dipsticks go, long time ago...?

hmmwv's come with 2 types of dipsticks. deep water and non. either will fit your pan just fine. I've done it to several local trucks that wanted better locking dipsticks.

Its simple....If you have a M1008 motor, and if its going into a humvee, get a Humvee oil pan and a dip stick to match, lots of them out there even at walkers.
If your M1008 motor is not going into a Humvee , then Chevy 6.2 diesel dip sticks are around, and Walker probably has some also, or a pick-a-part or other junkyard.
Walker is a great parts source, and I never had any problems from him.
If you think he's a parts Nazi, He's not, you might be the problem.

Politely asking Mr. Jwaller: please explain w/detail; what is the DEEP WATER, and what is BETTER LOCKING DIPSTICK that you speak of? Or is the onus upon us to do the research to determine these descriptions? Meanwhile, are these LOCAL TRUCK you've modded the '82 thru 87, M1008 variety? Or were they later/earlier model years perhaps unknown? Please specify.

Please be specific as much as possible; I am seeking the FACTORY INSTALLED oil dipstick & tube assembly for 1982-87, 6.2J engine for CUCV framed vehicles. Would be open to DEEP WATER mod or any other compatible setup, as long s the dipstick-tube setup will clear frame/manifold areas for this vehicle; BONE-STOCK 1985 M1008/CUCV -6'2J engine. Anyone know if this/these mod will work?


MEANWHILE; Problem is; proposed dipstick-tube for HUMVEE MUST be interchangeable w/1985 CUCV engine compartment parameters--- e. g. : clearance between frame-to-exhaust manifold area? Quite the bend-intube required here. Oil pan differences need to be taken into account please. Has this discussion become too difficult?

From my research, I doubt that your claimed compatibility of dipstick & tube assembly for 6.2 engined HUMVEE OIL PAN compared to CUCV OIL PAN --- IN THE RESPECTIVE VEHICLE FRAMES--- is a winnable case Mr Jwaller. Question; Have you looked at this issue in detail? Fitted up these parts in person? Hands on?

ANYONE ELSE? And I rest my case--- Please feel free to respond.

I have the exact right dipsticks and tubes on two M1009 Blazers that are going to be hauled off to the scrapper tomorrow. Sorry but I can't pull the parts for you. I just don't want to get dirty. You should try and find these parts at some place that specialises in New Old Stock parts for General Motors trucks. There have to be some of these still floating around. After all GM made thousands of the 6.2 engine that went into pick up trucks and Blazers both military and Civilian. You don't need to worry about the J Code in regard to the Dipstick and it's tube so you have a way better chance of finding what you need.

I see... well, too bad my inquiry has come to personal frosting... may I STRONGLY SUGGEST that you do the same parts searching for something obscure and difficult, and see your result.

Meanwhile, perhaps I wasn't very clear in my post; my vehicle is M1008. Need Dipstick tube assembly for this vehicle. Plain, simple.

After calling MANY & MANY of my local salvage yards for days and days for help with locating this part, their professional politeness was typical and fully expected. It wasn't until I mentioned that I needed a measly "oil dipstick & tube assembly" and the conversation immediately ceased, no further help was available. Now if you have not previously dealt with a PARTS NAZI then lucky for you. But that tells me that you've probably not dealt with very many parts people in general. Not 2 years ago, I most likely kept my local NAPA dealer's doors open because I spent several thousand dollars in his place, getting parts I needed that no one else gave a crap to provide. Why did I do this? Because he had the stuff I needed OR--- he could get what I needed for my project.... ASAP--- any questions?

In the salvage-parts business, there is no pity for one who has no home nor a dipstick assembly for his truck. I happen to be the later. If you aren't BUYING BIG TIME--- you ain't sheEYEte!

These salvage parts people are the MOST heartless, MINDLESS CARELESS vipers you will encounter on this earth. (how I wish one would respond to this post:twisted:)

The only fate they deserve is to be blindfolded, stood against a wall, and face a firing squad of PAINT BALL guns loaded with wet, poopy, doogie doo-doo.

Know that my friend and remember it when your time comes to deal with these same types... meanwhile thanks for your compassion and ultimate UN-concern... hope you have a nice day too.

What a FIASCO this has turned into my friend... if I could just get those dipstick assemblies from NOS type distributors I would have been as successful as a demon... only, none of those distributors stock those parts anymore... it's a sad day I must stand by and watch your dipstick tube assemblies go to scrapyard... POOR YORIC... I knew him WELL!

Now, I will finally know the meaning to this song... "where have all the dipsticks gone, LONG TIME PASSING... where have all the dipsticks gone... LONG TIME AGO...)

It's just bad timing. I'm heading off to a family gathering after the guy picks up the vehicles so there is no way that I'm messing with a junk car. Two weeks earlier would have been easy, but it's too late now. I might have had one pulled off, but they never break so I thought why should I bother. I'm curious, how much would you pay for an excellent condition take off J Code Dipstick tube and dipstick?
