Does anyone know if the starter from the NHC-250 in the M939 will work on the 400 Cummins in the M916/M920?

Given the transmissions are vastly different, I kind of doubt it, but does anyone know for sure?

Thanks!

The 7155 CAT tranny present in the M915-M920 series trucks does not use a flex plate, instead it uses a standard 15" Cummins flywheel that has a splined ring bolted to it for the centrifical clutch housing to engage in. Once you unbolt that ring, it's just a standard Cummins fly wheel.
So having said that, I think that they will interchange and I do have one of each on the shelf, so I will double check for you tomorrow and let you know wether they do or not.

So what all this means -

The M809 and M939A0/A1 trucks have the same starter.

The M915 and M915A1 trucks have the same starter.

The M939A0/A1/A2 starter is not the same as the M915A0/A1 starter.

Medium and heavy duty starters follow an SAE 3 bolt mount pattern, regardless of engine maker. What differentiates them is the pinion teeth (heavy duty usually has an 11 larger tooth pinion, and medium duty has a 12 smaller tooth pinion). There are 2 different mounting bolt hole diameters (not a deal breaker as the starter pilots off the nose cone flange), and then 12 and 24 volt versions. The pinions easily interchange. There can be a slight clocking difference between nose cones for placement of the solenoid, but that is usually not an issue. The starters mount into the engine flywheel bell housing, regardless of trans type.
