My Whoopee Lights and convoy signs

OK I used a THULE rack. Cost was $100 for the pair and as I have two M1009's that are getting this style of light, I considered $50 for the rack not too bad. Came off of Craigslist locally.

The two brackets I used were Thule load stops. I got them for $12 plus s&h.

RandyLBarnes drilled the three rivets out, pounded the sheetmetal flat and then attached the metal side back with bolts.

The lights are Whelen's. 1079's and are fairly old. They came with an even older power supply, also Whelen. I paid $48.90 shipped off of Ebay.

What's with the chain? That looks like crap. You wouldn't have that on none of my convoy vehicles. They will be stored in there proper place and that is not the place.

That chain? It's there when one of our club members vehicle dies at a parade. That way SOMEONE can tow it to safety. I also have a 30' 30 ton tow strap, tree strap, blah, blah, blah - you guys know the routine. IF I'm driving my dually, I sometimes throw the medium tow bar in the back.

NO, I don't DO the towing. I just provide a way for a vehicle to be towed.

And so far, you are the only person who hasn't liked it.

I looked for several weeks for a 30+ foot of used chain, properly rusted, etc...

Alas, there was no joy in Mudville. So I went to Lowes and bought the chain for less than $40 each. The funny part is I have one on the front of each truck. I USE the one wrapped around the front grille of the dually. most of it's 'gold' color is off.

If anyone knows where I can find used chain LOCALLY IN DENVER area cheap, fly me kite...

No offense, but I take umbrage at the 'proper place to store them'.

We all have an opinion. Don't take this the wrong way, but I ain't IN the military. Just as my lights are NOT correct. They are not attached the correct military method to the vehicle. MY CONVOY signs are my own and are NOT correct.

See a pattern here?

The only people who know the difference ARE the military folks. And they know why I do what I do.

To HONOR and RESPECT the military folks for their service.

So if my chain not being in the correct place bothers you, you have my sincerest apologies. I won't be moving it. But I do understand WHY you have concerns.

As for the chain, I've seen alot of people driving with them wrapped like that on the front, especially in the winter time. Easier to find when you need it that way. Looks fine to me.

Overall looks good to me.

Your truck, your chain, looks fine to me. Like the rack, wouldn't mind getting one for mine. Used to have one, but the Guard kept it. Where do you find the Thule thingys?

Thule makes rack systems for vehicles. For an M1009 you will need one that attached to the gutter. Bar length is 58" and any shorter and it won't actually fit on the truck. I got mine off of Craigslist here in Denver for $100 for the pair. They were sold in pairs - you need two of them if you are actually holding skis, snowboards, bikes, etc.

The wires are run through a predrilled hole that looks like there was a single whoopee light at one point. So I cut the cable, ran it in place and put the connectors on. Same thing on the inside. Though I have not finalized either the switch location (leaning towards the removable panel under the steering wheel as I have several of those) or the power supply, though I have a rough idea, mounted someplace near the gun racks

Good deal. I keep my chain on the front of my deuce. Thus, I don't have to wonder where it is.

Yeah, and the OLDER YOU GET the worse trying to find things you've misplaced gets.

I'm 57 so I'm about half way down the 'old folks road' so to speak...

And I do understand that concern about coming off the front of the truck. But I've worked very hard at making that difficult at best. You will find both hooks on front with the opening to the rear. The chain is tightly wrapped and then the last section is wrapped around that, through the shackle then on to the front grill again.

NOT as good as a locked metal box to be sure, but I don't have any of those. I MAY ADD THEM to my M101 trailers and if I do, I may move the chains. But for now, this keeps them from inside the truck where they could become missiles. My test run is down a dirt road that is just horrid. dips, bumps, multiple shortie bumps that want to jar your teeth out, stuff like that. The chains have held through that patch at 35 mph. And I actually still have them, so that's a good thing.

I like the chain idea, crap now i got to go out and buy one for my M1009, with winter approacing its a good idea to have easy and quick access to your chain or tow strap, who the **** wants to climb out, go to the back, unlock the window (as long as it ain't frozen) crank the window down, lower the tailgate, climb in and get the chain or strap, put the tailgate back up, hook up the chain or strap, pull yours or somebody else vehicle out of the ditch, unhook the chain, throw it back in the truck, roll up the window, lock it, get back in, freezing cause you let all the heat out with the back window being down, and head on your way, ohh don't forget to put the chain or strap back in it's proper place when you get home

And all I know is that in the winter, the less time my hands are outside my gloves, out side my truck handling chains is a good thing. I wish I would have had such a well crafted response. All I know is that my hands hurt when the weather changes...
