Guys I need your help….. I have an M1009 has gone through three flywheels / starters…It’s a starter to flywheel ring gear problem… We have replaced two new GM flywheels along with two different starters… We have done the standard… Went through the starters, new drives, bushings, solenoids, etc… Checked all alignments… Everything is tight, etc. (New bolts)… The last time it only went 25-30 starts until the starter drive started hitting the ring gear again…. Then it may go 10 +- starts before it hits…. What are we missing??? It is driving us nuts…. Any Ideas??? Thanks

John

Just a thought you seem to have changed everything else that would cause the problem! Not sure what the run out should be . I would guess about .015 will need to check that

Is the starter gear not retracting fully? Might wanna get a friend to go under there with safety goggles while you start it and watch what's going on.

.015 clearence required between teeth and pinion.check and adjust as required.use correct gm bolts.tighten very slowly and evenlyuse some grease to see where the contact pattern is.it will be correct when in the center with gear extended.

This bit of information was given to me last night while under my M1008 dealing with a flexplate that is not quite true and mating it with an oily "no shim" starter.

If the drive is not retracting check these
1) a flexplate that is not true-- remove the flexplate inspection cover and look at the flexplate as it turns. It may not be true therefore not giving the starter the square alignment needed for proper engagement and causing binding at times. It may be able to create its own new wear pattern if it is not too bad.

2) starter may need to be shimed--The starter may be engaging too deep in the gear. Try looking at the wear pattern on the flywheel when stopped. It should not have wear at the bottom of the valley between the teeth. When "no shim" starters are rebuilt the nose cones are sand blasted, which as we all know removes material. Even though it says no shim it make have been changed from its factory size and need a little help.

Besure to check the distance with a guage as mentioned above. You will need a long wire guage and a 3 inch dental style mirror to do it properly.

3) fresh starter and flexplate not engaging.--When the starter gets oil in it, it will still send the bendix out but when it engages the sprag dosen't d have enough friction to cause it to lock up and turn the engine over properly. A simple removal and cleaning of the starter fixed the problem quickly.

Hope this helps
