M1009 650 miles in one day

Loaded up my 86 M1009 so full that the back window wasnt visible and drove from NW Ohio to Atlanta on Saturday. My wife, our two labs and I drove the I-75 south and averaged about 65 mph for the trip. I was really surprised how much torque the CUCV had going through TN... I blew some coal (i hope that black smoke wasnt bad) pushing the M1009 to almost 80 mph going up a long incline [thumbzup] No issues for the whole day either! a little oil in KY just for good measure

Anyway I have had my rig almost two years and the outside is thrashed but the truck has been a champ after getting some regular part updates. CUCVs are not perfect but for 24 years old I sure feel like mine is:p

A good trip, the longest trip I have done is 150 miles one way and back a total of 300 plus running around so about 400 miles in 3 days. I kept mine about 60 to 65 and just enjoyed the ride because I had just replaced all my shocks and the captan's chairs were real nice .

My little venture up to get Stonepicker 1 in the deuce last week was 643 miles round trip. 13.5 hours in the saddle. The Oh-9 is the greatest MV for highway travel for sure!

I drove straight home from the Ga rally in the M1008, 18 hours/1000 miles. 8 stops for fuel. :cookoo:

80 up an incline? wish I could get mine to do that!
I have a hard time maintaining 50 if there's much of a hill at all and a 6%-8% grade will slow me down to 30 or less.
Guess I have some work to do :)
also, did you have ear plugs? It has been (loudly) recommended to me by a near def grandfather that I get some sort of hearing protection. He seems to think that the engine drone from his days as a military pilot (sans headsets) contributed to his lack of hearing. I imagine he's correct.
sounds like a fun trip though! I'm hoping to take mine from central NC to the coast of Maine once school lets out in May

Oddball,
WHAT DID YOU SAY???? LOL!!8)

I've lost some of my hearing for sure over the past 57 years. There are lots of ways to quiet down a CUCV.

I put fatmat and an underhood insulation blanket under the hood from LMC Trucks and it really quiets things down. Then you can put fatmat on the inside, a layer of jute and a layer of rubber or carpet and THAT will also help keep things quiet inside the cab.

Ive driven from Las Vegas to Seattle 6 times in mine. Always none stop one way except for fuel and check the fluids. 3 times I was pulling 2 harleys on a trailer.

Haha! That fatmat stuff looks decent. I've just got my CUCV about a week ago, so I'm still looking into my options for making it a little quieter. I came across some stuff called lizard skin (spray on) that looks decent. any idea if it would be a problem to put a spray on over the fatmat? I would prefer to keep the m1009 carpet free because of the snow and clay around here.
Thanks for sharing the link!

I took a few pieces of fatmat that I cut to fit into the hood before installing the LMC Trucks underhood insulation blanket. The middle hole in the hood IS NOT THE SAME SIZE as the rest of the holes and the round plastic anchor WILL NOT FIT the middle hole. So check the size before you try and put an anchor in that will not fit. Ask me why I know that.

I'm glad to hear a good review on the FatMat. I've been thinking about going that route on mine.

I do not know if I could do 650 miles in one day non-stop in a M1009, my Tahoe or Crown Victoria yeah. But I did just drive 450 miles in my M1009 in a 24hr period, 200 miles each way and about 50 mile running around town. I went to Hooks (Red River Army Depot) to get a M101A2 trailer and other then not having cruise control it was a smooth trip at about 70mph. The longest I have gone before that was about 120 miles round trip a few times. I bought my M1009 in June and have already put on about 3000 miles, for a pleasure vehicle that is allot of miles; IMO.

Try 900 miles in one day in your M1008. That is a long day, we left at 0430 and pulled back in the driveway a little after 0100 the next morning.....and I felt like we pushed the M1008 too hard. Glen
