Yoke Play

There is about 1/8" of play in my m1009's front D44 yoke. It will move in and out. What needs to be replaced and do I need to pull the whole carrier assembly to do it or just the yoke nut?

Sounds like you need to tighten the pinion yoke nut. This is common.
If you dont have a new nut, take off the old one, clean everything up, put locktight on the threads, and tighten to required rotating torque speck.
Oh and that should be a 10bolt front axle unless someone changed it.

The truck has had an axle swap. D44 front and 14 bolt rear. I tried to tighten the nut but impact couldn't get it any tighter than it currently was? Do I need to go tighter or does that mean it's another component?

Take it off and see what the problem is. Should be a big thick washer behind the nut. Mabey the threads a boogered up.
Good time to change the seal if it needs it.

It sounds like it is time to take it apart and see if the pinion bearings are still good. 1/4 inch is a lot of play.

I would assume that both bearings are bad. As long as the pinion has not walked into the carrier and broken any teeth, I would put new bearings in it and try to get a little preload on it.
