Scouts get New Deuces

Bought one M35 w/w from Surplus, the other (m109) at auction. Both Started right up with a jump and ran great. The M35 has a small fuel leak in one hose, but other than that in great shape. The M109 engine has a data plate that says it was overhauled in '94, the box has no rust on it and all the glass is intact, it does not have a cab top though. The Scouts will work on the M35, the M109 will probably be up for sale soon. The Scouts (and Scoutmasters) really appreciate all the help everyone on this site has given us. Thanks again.

My deuce is claimed by the troop right up until it's time to spend $.

Troops cant own property, technically everything that the troop owns belongs to the chartering organization.

BiilF is right, Troops don't own property, we are a venture crew, but the same rules apply. the M109 was bought by the me at an auction, as a private individual. But as like most everything, whatever I own, the Scouts seem to think they own also...

We have a trailer that the charter didn't want to get involved with so it's registered to the troop. I checked with my insurance agent and they say it's ok for me to tow it with my civy truck. The local venture crew that just folded was chartered by a different organization but they still gave us all their gear. I know what the rules are but I don't think charters get involved too much.

Why not keep the 109 to haul thing and as an "oh sh!t" severe weather shelter for the camp outs?

Sever weather shelter?! Shoot, that's a club house. If you are going to inspire capitalism in kids why not flip deuces, lol. GL can teach them how not to do business and the leaders can teach them how to.

We have a limited budget and limited skills, we (the scouts) have 2 deuces, both run great and everything but we need to pick just one to really work on. We will take some parts form both to hopefully put together one really nice one. I mean sandblast, paint, new seats, wiring etc. The 109, was just a really good price and I couldn't pass it up, thats why its probably got to go...to finance the other one, besides, don't want the scouts to get too comfortable in the nice dry 109

We really are not "flipping" deuces. Both M35s we have we got super...and I do mean super cheap. the 109 I bought at auction and thought we might finance other projects, or I might just keep it like "flyingvan911" said and use it as the Scoutmasters clubhouse. Our plan is to use the project Deuce in parades and to haul gear and our MKT on long term campouts. We have a huge summer camp coming up in 2012, we expect 200+ scouts, so some of this equipment will come in handy.

I was wondering how the scout unit planned to use the trucks, then I see the plans are to haul gear. I hope anyone who uses the deuces knows that it is against BSA policy to allow scouts or scouters to ride in the open bed of any vehicle. Unfortunately, that means no riding on the troop seats in the bed, despite how cool that would be. That's a huge issue down here.

I am an eagle scout (2006) myself, so I love seeing this type of thing.

My troop was huge for the area (50 kids) when I joined as a 6th grader, and then the chartered organization decided they didnt want us anymore...so they sold the building we were housed in, and moved! Then when they wouldn't give us new meeting space or even time in their hall on Wednesday nights, we said we wanted to be charted somewhere else. So, they tried to get us to fold, and keep all the equipment for themselves! This was a church by the way...

after a year long battle, we finally were able to re-locate to the local sportsman's club, but this was only after legal action was taken by the council.

So I guess the truth its, chartered organizations can get involved if they really want to cause problems...they do technically own all of the equipment the troop buys/acquires.

Wise by you guys to keep it in your names instead!

Yes "crawdaddy" you will notice I said "haul gear", not scouts. Trust me, I have been a scoutmaster for 20 years. Even at Parades, the scouts would have to walk beside the truck, not ride in it. Violate BSA policy and see how fast any insurance claims would be denied. We can however use this equipment to haul gear, trailers, and work on them to earn merit badges and learn some good ol mechanical skills

Cool to use it as a teaching tool. Too many people don't have a clue when it comes how to do anything more than change a light bulb. No open rides in the Young Marines either, Insurance coverage is Nil and the legal wording of the charter puts it all on the CO. If your unit does it and your the CO and something happens, the lawyers go after your house and personal finances.

I have only one change to make in your statements about scouts riding in the back of the deuce. This is allowed when you are in a parade, but not to or from the parade location.

nofearnohope, do you have any supporting documentation for saying scouts can ride in the bed for a parade? As far as I understand, the policy is very black and white about riding outside of the cab of a vehicle.
